Ah!  You shouldn't have to go through any of the multiple builds if you use the
built system to build packages.  Most of stuff you can build with;

    ./configure --prefix=/usr
    make && make install DESTDIR=$PKG

And then tar/gzip $PKG.  Not all of it is that simple but most of it is.  For
the unique situations I adjust accordingly but seeing packages don't require
building every time it isn't often that I need to jump through that hoop.  The
worst situation is util-linux.  Man that is a real hassel packaging.

I use a basic fstab template for that and then just edit it appropriate for the
targetted drive/partition.  If the target never changes, such as in the case of
bootable flashdisks then I never have to edit it since it is ALWAYS the same as
the root file system is mounted into a ramdisk.  Seems to me that it would be
more difficult to write a script then simply editing it for unique situations. 
However that depends on how often you plan to do this and it could be scripted
not unlike the setup script in Slackware which uses a busybox enviroment.

Depending on what kernel you are running and the target's needs much of what
you need is in either /proc andor /sys.  Also I have the device.txt handy from
the kernel source just in case.  If you are using hotplug/udev then this might
be a whole lot easier but that may fail if the targetted machine is totally
different from the host machine you are installing from.
