See, I got this thread back on-topic, and the Subject still
makes wry sense.

I don't install half the packages, and in some I configure
without apps I don't think necessary.  I'm going to have to use
it to cut & paste the LFS build commands into scripts again.

I know.  Somebody tightened the acceptable syntax, and the older
KDE used some sloppy constructs that got past the old compiler.
Linus insists gcc-2.95 is the proper compiler to use for the
kernel, but I've been using the native v3.x in pod.  Same
difference.

Tar was what's running.  Despite it's protestations of
innocence, I'm still a little suspicious of the drive.

KDE wasn't even in the picture for this.  It was just a KDE
tarball.

"Have"?  No boot loader, it's all squeaky clean now.  All the
King's horses and all the King's men couldn't put it together
again, couldn't even delete & start over.  So I wrote zeros to
the whole thing.  It was using grub.  Some partioners could see
the small hda1 (/boot), hda2 extended with hda5 (/), but even
those had bad pointers, so they said.

I've got a Trinux with a 2.4.21 kernel & packages.  Figured that
was new enough.  Tried fdisk, sfdisk, Knoppix/parted.  Finally
accepted the error of my ways and began doing my penance.

Should be.  Pascal's smart and has decent judgement for a "kid".
Haven't heard from him in a while.  Had Knoppix & new Trinux
floppies, vs not even having a cdr burner package installed, so
I took the easy way out and went with what I had.

Can't blame parted.  It was hosed pretty badly.
