Hey Paul!

Yep. I've seen that which is why I keep it up to date. I think the biggest
reason for upgrades are bios's and large drives as I usually didn't have
problems unless migrating to newer systems.

 PR> When I tried to use
 PR> the copied system's lilo that didn't work either.

Right. You'll need a newer version. Also will need bin86 if you plan to build
it yourself. The source, or even the lilo supplied by ttylinux is up to date
and can be copied across without installing bin86 (/sbin/lilo). Make sure you
do a 'ldd' first just to make sure but it works with both a glibc-2.3.6 and a
glibc-2.4 based systems with 2.6 kernels (I've checked). Also it is my
understanding that lilo is recommended for 64-bit systems. Should know for
sure on Monday as the cpu was shipped late yesterday and didn't arrive today.
I'll let you know what I find out wrt both lilo and grub on there but I
understand grub will fail on most 64-bit systems.

 PR> No I didn't
 PR> have a boot floppy, well, I did, it was Tom's RTBT!

I think that is a tad dated just to copy across. I haven't tried it in at
least five years since I haven't had a floppy drive in at least that long,
actually longer but I have built and booted floppies on other's machines.

 PR> How does
 PR> one get lilo to work when it's not the native system running.

Boot ttylinux. It's lilo works but you may need a special lilo to boot a
different drive then you booted from. If I assume a floppy boot then mount the
target drive on /mnt, say 'mount /dev/hda1 /mnt', and then either copy this
across to /mnt/etc/extra-special-lilo.conf;

disk=/dev/hda bios=0x80
boot=/dev/hda
map=/mnt/boot/map
install=/mnt/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=50
image=/mnt/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.xx.yy
  label=NewKid
  root=/dev/hda1
  read-only

Then run 'lilo -C /mnt/etc/extra-special-lilo.conf' and it should boot. You
could also change the hda parts above to whatever drive and partition you need
to have bootable and also add other entries if needed. Also change the kernel
version to whatever your version is.

Piece of cake!  :-)

 PR> Running lilo just because you just recompiled the running kernel

Understood.

 PR> (It's not a problem with grub boot floppy of course.)

As long as it works. ;-)

Life is good,
Maurice
