Oh, I thought I'd simplify things with the rule, "be where
you're installing." So after formatting and mounting I change
to the target, start the script from wherever it is, then the
script asks, "Where are my files?" That becomes $PREFIX on all
the file names. Same idea in reverse, pull instead of push. I
thought pulling would eliminate some problems, like "can't get
there from here."

When it gets near the end, it runs the script I made to build
fstab, which asks, "What is the boot device?", "What is the root
device?", "What is the swap device?" Those get saved in
/etc/sysconfig/hd, then back in the clone script, sourced, and
used for setting up lilo.conf.

Where the actual running rootfs is, well, so far it's been
Knoppix, the CD, I guess. But later I plan to make up a version
of Trinux that will run from RAM. I need a few 2.4.21 modules
for that, so I'm planning on using my LFS base and one kernel
patch level. My "enhancements" take it up to 2.4.31. 32 is
out.

Yeah, I'm sure it will--it's too close not to. I'm just twisted
around. There's something I'm just don't "get". These things
happen all the time.

MK> fantastic but could use a good install script such as the

Yeah, bootstrapping is a really interesting process. Don't know
if you've read any of Douglas Hofstadter's books, especially
"Metamagical Themas", but I recommend them all. And you can
purchase them from Amazon through a link on my website, with my
great appreciation. ;-)

MK> Right. Same idea but I think we could take that up a notch
 MK> or two. Don't you?

I'm glad AMD/iNTEL are finally recognizing the value of full
virtualization and adding support to the CPU/chipset. IBM has
been doing it for decades! I ran 20 users & 3 CAD scopes on a
4381 that probably wasn't as powerful as most PC's. Not only
fully virtualized, but lots of "microcode assists" for OS
functions. OK, it only had 4MB of RAM, and was paging 200
pages/sec, so it wasn't running WELL, but it ran. We did a big
study and recommended the USAF max-out at 16MB, but they could
only afford 8MB. IBM had told them 4MB was enough for the
workload (anything to make the sale).
