You're using more modern stuff than me.  Some of my MoBo's have
header blocks for USB, but I don't have the proper connectors
and BIOS support is questionable--so I don't bother with it.
So for me to use ttylinux, it'd have to be off a bootable iso
CD image--ala Knoppix.  But all my boxes have floppies, so Tom's
or Trinux is the way to go.

What I'm cloning is the drive on which I was building 2.6, this
is the "host" system.  But even though I could make it bootable
and go, if it isn't going to take too long I'd like to get this
first cloning script really working--otherwise it'll still be a
problem when I get the new version done.

Yeah, I need to rebuild all the build scripts and that takes a
lot of time.  Then there are half a dozen packages, some which
have to be built twice, that take about 8-12 hours to compile.
Overall, I forget how many packages there are building stage 1
(about 50?), there are about 60 in the final stage 2, nearly 40
in my basic enhancements, and over 40 for the GUI.  Given 2-3
hours/day to actually work on it, it'll take months once I get
ready.  So, yeah, I want to get it going sooner than later.

I suppose I could begin making the build scripts on my
production system.

Yeah, I feel a flame coming on.  For years I tried to get a job
but never got recognition or appreciation for my experience, but
all those "newbies" that built all these modern systems didn't
"forget" basic things like security, they were never even aware
of them.  They did such STUPID things!  For a while, I was
collecting stories on my Headline.html page, but the flow never
changed.  I mean, could you imagine beginning a software install
on a computer connected to the internet AND THEN quitting for
the weekend and leaving the computer ON?!?!?!?  How could
someone like that get hired anywhere, and nobody even calls me
for an interview?

I can't blame you for wariness of doing anything inherently not
anonymous on the web.  But his books really are interesting for
computing.
