Hmmm! I don't know what eCS is but you should have no problems with
video  or sound that can't be easily sorted. Firefox browser comes with 
most distros and has numerous plugins. Even some Windows use it in
preference to IE.

Linux has it's own boot loader which is automatically installed by
most distros. If it goes wrong you can undo it with the boot 
installation CD by selecting "rescue" at boot time. If I'm
wrong the perhaps an Ubuntu user here can give you a better picture.

Shouldn't be a problem.

Put your Ubuntu boot CD in the drive and just boot it. ;) Linux
won't touch any foreign partitions unless you do something silly and
and ask it to. During installation yo may be asked something like
"use the entire disk","use free space" or "custom" Choose "custom".

40 Gig is plenty of room. I have one machine that has Win 95 and 
Mandrake 9.x full installation on a 2 Gig drive.;)

I don't know the Ubuntu setup procedure but it is probably much
like any other. You may be asked how you would like to partition
the free space. If you have the option to let the distro choose
then IMHO you should let it. If not you can have what's called
a monolithic installation. This means you can have one big
root partition "/" without the bunny ears of course. This is a
good way to start when you are new as you may wish to later
pull the system down and instate your own partition regime.
You may need to have a swap partition and usually this should be
twice the size of your ram but not more than 256 Mb.

If during the initial install you become nervous about the
the partitioning process then just turn the computer off if you 
can't warm boot. Take the disk out while the BIOS is doing 
it's thing.

Nothing will change until you are asked to format the space
so relax and don't feel rushed or trapped. The boot loader
is usually installed at the end of the setup and i usually put
it in the MBR but you can use the first partition of the
linux space. Don't forget to make a boot rescue disk of your
old O/S just in case of bootloader conflict.
