Ärende: installing Linux with eCS
=================================
Hello Alan,

SH> Ubuntu is a pretty nice version. Personally, I have Fedora Core
SH> 5 installed, but have also loaded up Ubuntu upon occasion.

AH> How much difference is there between versions? Will they all run
AH> Linux apps, or will I have to look for, say, the Ubuntu version of app
 AH> X when I download said app?

The distribution is irrelevant when it comes to running applications in
Linux (or more technically, GNU/Linux). The applications such as
OpenOffice will run regardless of whether you use Fedora, Debian,
Ubuntu, Knoppix, Gnoppix, SuSE, or other distribution as long as it has
what the program requires. Sometimes, you can find and install a
program that will require you to install other utilities in order for it
to run, but that isn't a Linux problem. For example, there is a recipe
managment program that requires certain database libraries to be present
in order to run. Those libraries may or may not be part of a Linux
distribution.

For example, a commercial distribution such as Mandriva or SuSE is more
likely to have paid the license fees to be able to include MP3 support
than a truely open source distribution such as Fedora or Debian. It
isn't that you can't play MP3 files with either one, but you would then
have to locate a repository for the files needed to add that in after
the install.

AH>> The rest of the drive (40 Gig) is unformatted at present. Could
AH>> I install the Linux to that free space? If so, how would I go
AH>> about it, and can I do it without messing up my eCS and Windows?
AH>> Will Airboot find it? Will booting the Linux CD write anything
AH>> to my primary (eCS 1.2) partition, and, if so, can that affect eCS 1.2?

<SNIP>

SH> You're welcome. Be prepared for a rather steep learning curve
SH> and for some shifts in the ways you are used to doing things. One
SH> thing I have found though. Gnome is more similar to eCS's
SH> Workplace Shell and KDE is more similar to the look and feel of
SH> Windows. I personaly like Gnome better than KDE, but you will
SH> have to try both and decide which one works better for you.

AH> Will both Gnome and KDE be installed to my drive, or will I be asked
AH> by the CD to choose one? *adh*

Again, that depends on the distribution. With Ubuntu, it is by default
a Gnome based user interface. There is an equivalent KDE based distro
called Kubuntu. Fedora is Gnome based, but has the option on install to
select KDE to install as well so you can switch back and forth between
the two. Other distributions may or may not have the options, or may
have other user interfaces such as Evolution or Fluxbox in place of or
in addition to Gnome and KDE. That is why I suggested you do a bit of
research before starting. The best way to learn, however, is to just go
ahead and install it. You will then gain hands-on experience, which you
cannot get in a book.

I prefer Fedora because I like the support I get in fedoraforum.org.
That is alongside the fact that of the different distributions I have
tried, I just prefer the "feel" of Fedora. You will have to try though.
Fedora can be much more intimidating than Ubuntu. Ubuntu is more
beginner-friendly IMO.

Regards,

Stephen
