I thought the same thing. Perhaps he built the hard disk up from DOS
and suffered some kind of BIOS limitation. If you take his megabyte
count at face value it's only 1.22 gig so it is an old setup.

That shows he has built it on an old system. I should have got the
date of the document. ;) 

I think first primary can be Win and the second O/S2. 
Linux can live in the extended partitions of the second primary.

Of course it is always fun upgrading but here we are talking about
disk structure.

Sounds like a plan. :) If Alans disk looks like this

then i can't see anything destructive happening by formatting the empty
space Linux ext2. I think all Linux installations will need "lilo" or
"grub" so it's just a matter of where to put it.

... To MBR or not to MBR, that is the question. ;)
