================
-> If you didn't live so far away I'd help out whether or not you asked for it.

Ah, you appear to be the sort of man I used to be.
Thanks for the cheering thought though.

-> Offhand I think it wouldn't be too hard to get your box back ontrack,
although
-> the HD's might get the heave-ho. Tough to say for sure from this angle.

Hate to be beaten but this malware has me stumped.
First time since 1995 when I got my first real computer.
Even had almost all those old files from that long gone machine.

-> WC> Security issues keep me from using the debit card on the internet.
-> WC> Upgrading via the internet seemed ideal until this bugger hit.

-> Right. You and millions of other people. You are not alone on this issue.

Wish I were.
Wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy.
Well that's a lie.
My physical status I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.
I cannot think of anything better to wish on my worst enemy
than this though I could *never* initiate such a dispicable attack.
Heck, I'm not clever enough to do it anyway.

-> WC> Quoting wrapped off page, is that /dev/zero?

-> Yes.

-> dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda

Well, what's to lose trying?
Thought I had an inspired idea how to beat this thing and hookked the
drive up again, no joy.
I'l get back to you about dd later after trying it but little
expectation given what I've already tried.

-> 'of' is whatever targetted unmounted drive. I had to do that with a
flashdisk
-> once except it was a weird one and I had to mknod a special device for it.
Now
-> that there are usb and other interface ones they are usually either sd or hd
-> and the idea is the same as regular harddrives. I have yet to do an entire
-> regular drive with dd but it might solve your problem. What have you got to
-> lose?

Not a thing.
Shall give her a go and let you know.

-> WC> Yeah, drive mapping. You'd need the manufacturers HD utility.
->  WC> Now that's a thought, if only I had a unaffected hard drive :-(

-> Always have a backup.

Yeah, feel the same about money.

-> WC> Wish I had a FIPS prepared boot diskette, that might just put
the
->  WC> drive
-> WC> right, or not, never seen fdisk fail let alone the fdisk x option.

-> Same here which is why I thought the drives might be physically corrupted.
If
-> so then I doubt anything will work.

-> WC> Hey, it was on the old slaved Seage I was just bragging on getting
->  WC> jumpered and working.

-> I thought that might be the case. Try just plugging in the other one alone
and
-> see if that straightens it all out.

Uh, just tried that too, no joy.

-> WC> I was happy with my Dumpster Gateway untill this weekend,
-> WC> Now it's RAMdrive only with 384 Meg of RAM.

-> Sounds good to me although 384M is overkill. ;-)

Well that bugger's currently running 5 times the apps I am as user.
it's set to phone home at 12:14 A.M. IIRC but ITMT there's no-one in my
address book, the email account doesn't exist and theres nothing for it
to log but my fidonet keystroking.

-> However you will need some sort of storage but the ramdisk system itself is
a
-> good way to run things.

Hardly custom configurable in the realistic sense.

-> WC> Let it try to leak into the read only CD or jump across the air where
->  WC> power and IDE
->  WC> cables once lay.

-> That would be tricky for sure. An EM pulse might 'fix' that 'problem'. ;-)

When and if I purchase a new hard drive I'll either introduce both
drives to a hammer or donate them to a virus software company for
examination.
Any non-memory protected diskette I'll burn at midnight while
performing an impromptu exorcising ritual.

-> ->> Do you like even Mozilla?

-> WC> Actually I rather do, or did, no do.

-> Okay. Personally I don't but I do see why others do. For me it just
-> represents more GUI stuff I never wanted to start with.

-> WC> This thing doesn't look like it's limited to Mozilla, it owns my hard
-> WC> drive through faking the hard drive geometry.

-> I think you are right.

After three days largely without sleep battling this thing I don't
"think" anymore, that's something for another day.
Well, perhaps my tale of woe will serve as warnig tpo the unwary.
I thought I could best any malware.
Wrong yet again.
Hey, it *did* take 11 years to throw in the towel on such.
