well, i've just gone thru this dsl and pppoe stuff myself... let me relate my
story...

my provider offerec me dsl at $2US less than what i was paying for dialup...
yes, two dollars less... big whoop, eh? anyway, they also provided a dsl
modem... ok, i already have a firewall machine with dmz and all that... it is
smoothwall... it has been operating on the dialup for quite a while... in
looking at the dsl modem, with their supplied win-baesd disk, it puts the
account name and password into the dsl modem... that means that the modem is
making the connection and getting the public on the WAN port... that puts the
smoothwall in the private address space and then everything behind the smoothie
ends up being double NAT'd or worse... definitely not a good situation when you
are running servers...

now, this dsl modem operates in two modes and right easily, i might add...
there's no majic hocus pocus to switch it to bridge mode as it is already
running in that mode as well as the normal mode... the trick is to NOT use the
setup disk and put the account and password into the modem... without them, the
normal side of the unit cannot connect... set up the PPPoE with the account and
password and off it goes! this puts the public ip on the smoothie's ppp0
interface which is "on" the smoothie and thus everything works a treat...

when i was going thru all this, i had tossed in an old realtek 8139 nic...
everything looked just fine except that pppoe could not make the connection...
it kept reporting timing out waiting on the reply packets for the pppoe
setup... after some 15 days or so, i realized that i wasn't sure if that card
was any good and so i put in another to which everything came alive with... no
muss, no fuss... if i had had a good card to start with, i doubt that i'd have
gone thru all the learning process that i did about my dsl modem...

FWIW: it is a speedstream 4200... my service is 3M/384k and i have had no
complaints with it at all since i put the good card in play... oh yeah, i'm
also 15 miles from town! ;)
