JB> does have three USB channels available, (along with some of the worst
JB> documentation I have seen,) so I suspect at least one of those
JB> bridges wouldn't intercept the call for an OS.

MK> Doesn't have to as long as the main boot system can mount
MK> and use whatever is put on those interfaces, even a CD
 MK> and/or DVD.

Again, with the language issue. If I have a USB memory device in a USB port, if
it has an OS in the BR or not, the board tries to boot from it, and will not
move to the next device. There is no mention of USB in my boot priority, but it
is priority #1, full stop. Do not pass go, do not collect $200. I opened the
PDF last night, and found it has 8 ports, on four (Forget what they call them.)
channels. I haven't experimented with the other three channels,
(busses/whatevers) if they are the same preemptive setup.

The kicker is, while leafing through the dox, I noticed a [F11] boot key, to
preempt the boot sequence in NVRAM. ...And no, still no mention of USB in the
grand scheme.

MK>> Gigabyte's bios where I could hit f12 on bootup and it

JB> I don't know the difference between "Plug" and "Swap".

MK> I am not positive. I call them all hotswap as long as it
MK> can be done on the fly (no reboot).

JB> controllers are HW RAID, "Passive Backplane Array" type systems, so
JB> I'm sure they could burn my toast if I worked on 'em enough. The
JB> software to run the pig, is run on an M$ product, and meant to occupy
JB> hda1, so I toasted it after my first attempt at lilo installation
 JB> proved fruitless.

 MK> Hm. I haven't tried those ... yet. I did have a sata one
MK> hotswapping and may have to do that again soon. So far it
MK> hasn't been an issue. IDE's still are and usb takes care
MK> of that at the moment.

Then you made me think, it may not be "Passive" as A) It does posses a device
number, B) It will allow the server to run at all times while replacing a RAID
volume. I just remembered the two letters "B" and "P" fly by on the bootup, and
forgot the order they were displayed.

JB> Now, on to that G3 I tripped over this afternoon... O-8*

MK> Heh, heh. Haven't touched one of those ... yet. I am not
MK> sure I really want to either. Maybe but I doubt it.

I think they will not take the latest, greatest OS from Mac, so I may have to
sell it to the neighbour kid. Sure glad he's well employed to fuel my
experiments. <G>

A cousin, in Edmonton turned his nose up at my Uncles attempt to drop a PC on
his desk, so for $5, I'll either use it as a tire chuck, or run up to Edmonton
with it when he borrows the jack-hammer.

MK>> Right. It used to be Mandrake not that long ago but I
MK>> don't hear as much from those people much these days.

JB> Because they changed their name? <G+D>

MK> They did? News to me. Who are they now?

FWLIK, it's now called Mandriva. Mandrake 10.0 was such a debacle, they
descided to roll back the version number to "One."

MK>> No. Microwaves are for popcorn.

JB> That, and long distance, non-satellite, high bandwidth
JB> communications. I wonder how many relays are still done through
JB> microwaves across the hills between us.

MK> There is one not too far from here on the Point. Both the
MK> neighbour and I have speculated on what would be needed to
MK> hack into it, not that we would. ;-)

If you could scale their tower, and hang your own homebaked transmitter and
horn off to one side... Just make 'em compact, and a different frequency, and I
doubt they'd notice.

... James
