Not so much the sale as there is good deals to be had, but as a rule the rebate
stuff tends to be on questionable material and the whole concept of rebates is
seriously flawed in itself.  Like I said, the good stuff never has rebates but
good deals are to be found.

I've never heard of them.  I have a NexStar-3 (usb and sata connections)
external case that has been great so far but did cost just under twice as much
as the regular price for such things.  Also it only has internal connections
for a sata drive but those are less expensive then regular ide drives these
daze so it all balanced out.  Works excellent as an external usb drive.

I've seen that happen.  Same with the straight usb->ide cables but those are
far cheaper so it isn't as much of a gamble.

The dealer in town had one of those and shipped it back to the supplier and
refuses to order such things anymore.  He is the one I got the NexStar-3 from
and I am happy with that.  Between the two of us we've managed to weed out a
bunch of crap.  He is learning.  Also he keeps an eye open for a few items he
knows that interest me which is cool.  I usually can't afford it but it still
is interesting to know.

Good plan.  It'll work out even if you have to put it on a regular ide
interface after.

This is a good echo but only because of some of the people that hang out here. 
It used to be better but we lost some of the good guys along the way.

Right.  That always happens no matter what.  Some here (in this echo) believe I

I don't know.  No real impact here, good or bad, so cannot say much about it. 
I still don't agree with the rebate idea other than to say it helps identify
stuff to be extremely wary of.  I can wait and see if those items survive over
the long haul as well as to see if I even wanted/needed them in the first
place, rebate of not.
