Ok now i understand what's going on. Although your setup has iptables
in your path it is not in the same directory as my distro.

If you have saved the original firewall script then you would only
need to change one line to reflect the location of your iptables
executable. I don't know what search app your distro uses but do.

"updatedb" if you haven't already done it then do.

"slocate iptables |less" or "locate iptables |less"

Find the iptables executable, probably in "/usr/bin" or "/bin".

My guess is "/usr/bin" so you would change this line to reflect it's
position.

IPTABLES="/sbin/iptables"

To.

IPTABLES="/usr/bin/iptables"

 WC> So simple it eluded me. Linux does this a lot.

Yes but you found the answer. Coffee and cookies are called for. :-}

I thing i know what's going on but i will have a yarn with you
Email.

Huh?

 WC> Ever try to talk about Linux syntax without invoking

Are you talking about "vim"? Then use "mcedit". If your talking
about the editor at docsplace then it has nothing to do with
you using Linux

 WC> Saw posts by Maurice but unable to respond to them.

Stinkin Maurice. ;-/ There is no reason you can't respond to
Maurice if you are using your OLMR + QWK.

 MA> Or just go there for the fun of it. :-}

 WC> Suspect you can count upon that though problem now ameliorated.

Ok. It is however the home of iptables.

 WC> It's about efforting the learning and not attaining a stable

 WC> that the day before yesterday :-)

Yea that's a problem if you only have one working machine.

 WC> Thinking about burning it all down just to do over<g>
 WC> Hey, how come none of youse guys told me about that
 WC> --help option working on ./configure for installing mplayer???

I installed mplayer a long time ago and thought i would leave it
to you and Maurice to thrash it out. I don't use slack so on some
things i can't help you.

 WC> I did it all the hard way!
 WC> Oh yeah, that's the way I like it, never mind.

Well yes but you need a stable system if you are not going to cause
yourself grief trying to post mail here every time the system crashes.

 WC> I think I can make a (:) delimited script to chain together
 WC> various multiple configuration tweaks and set the blasted
 WC> codecs directory *I* want after having already place the codecs
 WC> into it.

Again i can't help you much. Different distros and apps need codecs
in specific directories.

 WC> The new mplayer release is simpler to install than previos
 WC> version so I hate it.
 WC> OTOH it presents a challenge to overcoming its simplicity :-)

I prefer reverse engineering. First i do it the easy way and then
examine the config files and various components that make it tick.

 WC> Working hard to work hard to retain what is left.

 WC> Only Linux problem now is bad mbr but that's not really linux or a
 WC> problem. Wait, I retract that declarative remark.

 WC> Can't write to mplayers codecs directory.
 WC> ls returns no such file or directory but can't create it as root
 WC> either so it's a permissions issue.

Maybe or maybe not. Perhaps the disk is buggered.

 WC> Can't play WMV movie format until I can get that codec in there.

If you became more familiar with Midnight commander "mc" and it's
editor "mcedit" you could check what permissions your codecs
directory had and change them quickly. You could then study
"chmod" and "chown" command line syntax at leisure. I can't
in all good faith show someone who i am trying to help how
to make life difficult for themselves.

 WC> Need to brush up on permissions.

man chmod, man chown,

For permissions at a glance.

ls -l /whateverdirectorycodecsisin/codecs |less

 WC> Safe, secure and stable operating system so easy to install.

 WC> If I need a real challenge I'll try setting up a stable
 WC> Windows resistent to virus and trojans but I am not
 WC> quite that _advanced_ yet<VBG>

I hope you mean stable Linux. Don't bother installing any virus
scanner software in Linux. They don't do anything and are often
worse than viruses themselves.

Stay well.
