We never did make it any further west/east than Hawaii.  We did get a
good taste of oriental food there, and that is one of the things we miss
the most besides the mild weather.

Anyway, we are slowly getting settled in.  Both my primary system and my
laptop are currently running Fedora Core 6 quite well although for Fido,
I still am dual-booting the laptop so I can continue to use Professional
Point.

I did have to replace a printer.  It officially became a dinosaur when I
could no longer get the ink cartridges it needed (Canon BJC-610)
anywhere without special ordering.  I just replaced it with a Brother
HL-2070N network capable laser printer, which has Linux drivers
available from Brother.  It works just fine directly connected to the
LPT port on Ruth's computer and over the network from the others.

Office Depot had this one with a $50 rebate, which will reduce the price
before tax from $149 to $99.  The timing and circumstances were right so
Ruth let me purchase it.

The drivers installed easily enough.  They only required a little tweak
to change the default USB printing to socket://ipaddress:9100 port
printing.

I expect that this will cut the per page cost of printing down nicely.
I like the Brother MFC-420CN multifunction unit we have, but ink isn't
cheap, even if it does use the separate ink tanks for each color and
black.  I can now limit the use of the one to when I need/want color,
and use the laser printer for the bulk jobs when I only need black. :)

I hope you are getting your computer problems addressed.  I like having
multiple computers so I have some redundancy.  So far, I have not had
this Windows XP(home) installation die on me like yours died on you.  I
do limit what I do with it though, and have multiple tools to scan and
fix things along the way.  One of the best things I did was to set up
separate administrator and user accounts.   I only use the administrator
account for maintenance, not for daily work.  I figure that I can't goof
up as much when I am logged in as a user, and that practice seems to
save me a lot of grief, although it does have its annoyances.  It is one
of the many practices I have learned over the years.  I tell Ruth (and
others) that I do my computing in "paranoid mode".  A little paranoia
can be a good thing.  there are a lot of bad people out there who really
are out to get you.
