Hey WAYNE!

The key is what the kernel is allocating to the framebuffer device(s), or at
least it used to be. I just had a looksee and don't see the line I used to see
about restricting it so perhaps it no longer matters. I'll have to check.
However if you're planning to use the 3dfx driver for mplayer output (the -vo
switch) then it should only matter what that has allocated to it.

For my kernel and the matroxfb kernel driver I get the following from dmesg
about it;

matroxfb: Matrox G450 detected
PInS memtype = 5
matroxfb: MTRR's turned on
matroxfb: 1024x768x32bpp (virtual: 1024x4096)
matroxfb: framebuffer at 0x48000000, mapped to 0xffffc20000080000, size
33554432
Console: switching to colour frame buffer device 128x48
fb0: MATROX frame buffer device
matroxfb_crtc2: secondary head of fb0 was registered as fb1

That isn't the mga_vid I use for output with mplayer which is a kernel module
and it reports;

Matrox MGA G200/G400/G450/G550 YUV Video interface v2.01 (c) Aaron Holtzman &
A'rpi
mga_vid: Found MGA G400/G450 at 0000:05:00.0
mga_vid: MMIO at 0xffffc20000028000 framebuffer: 0x48000000
mga_vid: OPTION word: 0x480A1560 mem: 0x05 SDRAM
mga_vid: detected RAMSIZE is 32 MB
mga_vid: 1 supported cards found
mga_vid: using major: 83 (assigned or default!)

The RAMSIZE there is the total amount pf physical memory on that card and has
nothing to do with shared memory. Also the "-vo mga" setting in mplayer uses
/dev/mga_vid and *NOT* /dev/fb0 which is what the other framebuffer
applications I have use. As of this writing only mplayer is using /dev/mga_vid
and I haven't bothered with the second head ... yet! ;-)

WC> I've got the whole shebang in a perl script now.

That is a good idea. Personally I'd just use bash but something like you're
doing is a very good way to learn perl. I like perl but it is too bloated for
most of my targetted machines such as the new system I am working on (pure DC
input powered 486). I just finished wiring it into the DC and booted it for
the first time off a regular ide hard drive. Planning a new ide flash disk
system for it with two ide flash disks, one a default boot/root and the second
for backups and as a backup boot/root if the first one fails for whatever
reason. Always have a backup. :-)

It shouldn't need that much. As shown above mga_vid is only using 32M but that
is what is on the card and not shared memory. Works FANTASTIC!!!

WC> I'll look for that frame buffer figure shortly.

I looked and didn't see it in there anymore. It used to say but that was when
it restricted it to 16M tops. Obviously times have changed and I missed when.
The matroxfb works FANTASTICALLY with other framebuffer apps so I am not
complaining that is for sure.

WC> I need to run mplayer with the debug or a logging option

No doubt.

WC> Also videolan is coming along and I just need to set a

Right. I've needed to do that for a few apps. Not many but a few. pkgconfig
stuff.

WC> I'm not streaming as yet but that number will stick so no need to
 WC> write it
 WC> down

It is settable which makes it nice. For ftp streaming over the wireless
network I've been using an 8M buffer and a full length feature movie (mpeg4
with mp3 2 channel stereo sound) streams perfect that way. Using vsftpd as my
server of choice for streaming over the wireless, or wired for that matter.

WC> My local file or dvd options are
WC> mplayer -vo svgamplayer -vo svga dropframe cache 8192 dvd://n

I haven't used svga since the last century.

WC> More, a great deal more.
 WC> Ideal in fact.

I thought so. No surprise there.

WC> Be prepared to be surprised.
WC> That Betty Boop video came down a 8KB

That was my calculation by your reported stats about it. That is what I used
to see on a good connection.

WC> Succeeding I will be, there is no try ;-)

:-)

Life is good,
Maurice
