Maybe.  Is the bios set to boot to CD first?  Also if you plan to actually boot
a kernel off an ide cd-rom then the kernel on there better have ide cdd-rom
capabilities built right in and not modular.  Same could be said about sata and
usb drives.  If those two are not the issue(s) then I'd check the syslinux
configuration and make sure there isn't an error there.  Sometimes they'll get
as far as booting and providing a prompt but then cannot load the kernel on it
for a wide variety of reasons.

Should be built in if you plan to boot from ide.

This one can stay modular.  The only time you'll need it is with CD burners and
it is doubtful you'll ever need it on bootup.

Fine if you never plan booting from any ide disk/device.  If the kernel is on a
scsi device and the / is on a ide channel then it'll work.  If the kernel is on
an ide device then it likely won't no matter what you tell lilo.

I doubt that will work if the kernel is on the device and doesn't already know
hos to handle that device.  It might but I wouldn't bet the farm on it.  I know
that when booting usb disks I require the kernel on there to already understand
usb disks, hubs and a basic protocol or it won't boot.

Try building a new kernel with all the ide stuff built in without changing
anything else and see if that straightens it out.
