Hey Roger!

I am not sure what version MS was spewing out back then. I think we're talking
about the same one or perhaps an earlier or later version of the same EDIT.
Anyhow I still maintain that ALL DOS's reminded me of crippled VMS's no matter
what editor although if the same EDIT it was one of the better, if not best,
DOS editors. QEdit might have been the best but perhaps that is a judgement
call based on preferance rather then performance. Anything native to MS-DOS
usually was substandard as a rule and I have yet to see them come up with
anything superior even if restricting criticism to just DOS. From my
observations back then PC-DOS was the best all things considered.

RN> didn't think of that until just now. I can't find it on the

I haven't looked. The last DOS I had here working way back when was PC-DOS
5-ish. I used to have the floppies but gave them to someone in need way back
when. 5.0 if I have to guess.

RN> Joe and I used it back then and experienced no problems with it,

I had harddrive issues with it at the time. Mostly due to a lame bios which
lilo had no issues with once intalled to the root partition rather then the
mbr. Could never get OS/2 to cooperate with the scheme so it became a pure
linux system (Slackware). Did have dosemu running at the time just long enough
to realize I didn't need nor want it anymore. I had Maximus (DOS version)
working with a serial modem for a couple weeks on there. Lost interest in that
idea as I saw no future in it at the time.

RN> as with all electronics, what is a hot item today is obsolete
 RN> tomorrow.

Right. That never happens here. What does happen is if I find whatever to be
obsolete simply because it was crap right out of the Gates. :::snicker:::

For instance I still prefer tcpip on ethernet cards which happens to be the
original way I started networking PC's way back when. Still using ftp as the
preferred file transfer method. Some things seem to have taken hold for quite
some time now even though the hardware itself has gotten better and faster and
changed somewhat over time. Same original idea.

 >> That was never a requirement to my knowledge, not to say I let that
 >> stand in my way.

RN> It was during the brief spell I used it.

That must have been the original then. I haven't noticed it being a
requirement, or even needed, since about 3.something-or-other. Sometimes but
not as a rule.

 >> It isn't c? Tsk, tsk.

RN> I think is, but I'm not sure.

Then it should be no problem porting it one to the other. Probably some slight
modifications to the source but not too much. If you look at the binkd source
you'll get a basic idea of how it could be accomplished. Offhand that is one
project that comes to mind although the Husky stuff could also be an indicator
but that is far more going on there then just one application. That is all c
source that apparently is doable on many different OS's. Certainly something
to consider and check out.

Life is good,
Maurice
