ml> i don't have any type of *nix software on there,

MK> There isn't that much to know about. What little is out there
MK> isn't all that *nix-ish to start with and from what I've seen over
MK> the years I have serious doubts ever will be.

the idea is/was to have links to software that will run on *nix regardless of
its DOSish nature... it is all we have, ya know ;)

MK> What would be best imho is a proper document spelling out EXACTLY
MK> what current acceptable standards are wrt transfers instead of the
 MK> umpteen questionable ones

one document pointing to each of those currently listed that are acceptable...
that could be done... the thing is that there are many acceptable standard for
the transfers... i won't even begin to enumerate those for the actual
processing and handling of mail and files ;)

MK> along with the scads of proposals currently available for general
MK> consumption. I believe that needs to be done and should have
MK> happened ages ago. I haven't been holding my breath on that ever
 MK> happening. How about you?

i don't see a problem with having proposals available... without them, one
would have to start from ground zero and could very well reinvent the wheel...
with the current proposals, one could go and see that there's already one that
fits their idea... in that case, they could go about implementing that and if
the implementation gets widespread and common use, then the proposal would be
elevated to a standard...

no, i'm not holding my breath on that... the problem i see is one of NIH
syndrome... there's too much of it out there ;)

ml> and bbs packages for the various operating systems... guess i need to
ml> do some more work, eh? O:)

MK> Good luck. You'll need it.

hehe, well, there aren't all that many, really... seems that no one, other than
you, has any real interest in doing anything with fidotech... seems they are
all blinded by the artificial light from the internet and believing that it is
somehow better over there O:)

MK> I like the idea of stripping off the binary headers and sending
MK> them to the bit bucket. Speaking for myself, they shouldn't be
MK> there in the first place as that would have saved much grief over
 MK> the years.

well, those binary headers contain important information that just can't be
thrown away... converting it to something more useful in a text format is
always possible and i have no problems with that...

we should also note that there are two sets of binary headers... one for the
PKT file (currently 3 possible one in use) and one for each of the messages
contained within the PKT...

PKT Header contents:

the PKTs can be routed via any path... the messages within the PKT may not be
destined to a system that the PKT arrives on... remember, this is a store and
forward system... the PKTs contain the info on the source and destination of
the PKT... each system opens the PKT and then shuffles thru the messages
contained with it... this shuffling is when the processing system creates new
PKTs for other systems and places messages in those PKTs... any messages in the
PKT being processed for the processing system are place within its message
bases...

the _only_ real difference between echomail and netmail is that echomail areas
contain an AREA control line... that is the first thing to identify a message
as echomail or netmail... at that point, the processing software can branch to
the proper processing routines for each... basically, though, they are the same
as far as the headers are concerned...

what data in the above headers would you throw out and why?

how would you handle fidonet's current capabilities without that data being
present?
