Ärende: Kermit, BBS UNIVERSALITY

Hey MICHEL!

Understood. The problem with "universality" these days is that often the
standard ports, telnet being one of them, are being blocked by those supposedly
looking after our "security". Funny thing about that is that my little server
is far more reliable then the dhcp server looking after business in this neck
of the woods. 99.99% of the connectivity problems are due to the cable server
going down and not this little 486-33 Linux server.

MS> The `RIME_DOS' EchoMail should be accessible to you on these
 MS> BBSes:

Sure. One problem with that is I don't like DOS. Far too crippled for my
needs for a server. How are the rest going to like when I bad mouth their OS
of choice? Can they handle "criticism", especially my version of it?

MS> I discovered that you're located in British Columbia but there's

That is correct. Can you handle a different port?

Same here but my email address is tothings@minimalinux.org and is probably a
more private and secure way of exchanging information such as passwords.

MS> I'm sorry to mention `RIME' in this `FidoNet' echo, by the way!

Don't be. I don't believe they are a threat or competition to Linux. The
moderator might feel different but I personally don't. Knowing my experiences
sith DOS and Linux I doubt anyone there could persuade me to return to DOS.
What for? They got squat in comparison to Linux.

MS> So... :) Is the Shaw cable company OKay with you running
 MS> servers?

They have no say. They aren't paying for any of them. None of my servers
service cable and I have no plans in that direction unless they start paying
for it. I pay for the service they provide here which is just a connection to
the outside world. I don't even use their email service so they are getting
the better end of this deal methinks.

MS> Something tells me we're talking ~SSH~ all the sudden. If it's
 MS> the

 MS> and
 MS> ~SSH~ simultaneously anytime soon!

Ah! Too bad. Another good reason not to use it. Why do you? What benefits
are there to using DOS?

MS> i'll need to verify that it would allow `Kermit' over
 MS> ~SSH~;

While reading the docs I noted that it would employ the openssl libs here so
they got compiled in. I could also switch telnet access to a different port if
you can handle that. Apparently that will work here since I can alter the
ports, as well as the interface(s), any daemon listens in on.

 MS> worry!

Sure. We may need to get creative but only due to limitations of the silly
servers in between us. Apparently they call that "security". Please pardon my
French but I call it bullshit. :-)

MS> I'll be glad to give it a shot! 8-) Of course, the cps rate i
 MS> can
 MS> reach on a 8088 4.77 Mhz is going to be about a few hundreds, it's a

 MS> ~DSL~
 MS> on a P-200 Mhz). Once done, we'll publish a "Ready-Made" SysOp kit!
 MS> :)

We'll see. Email me and we'll decide on a simple test and see where that goes.
I see no valid reason we can't tweak some additional preformace out of the
8088.

MS> is called weird evangelism by SysOps like, say, Rob Swindell
 MS> anyway?!...

I've seen an example of his work. He doesn't worry me.

Life is good,
Maurice
