Ärende: Kermit, BBS UNIVERSALITY
================================
Hi Maurice,

About "Kermit, BBS UNIVERSALITY" of September 2 and 3:

MS> ...minimally equipped PCs allow networked messaging...
MK> ...often the standard ports... ...are being blocked... Here is
MK> what I've figured out so far about IKSD... The default port is...

Some times unexpected misunderstanding happens, that's one of them:
from my perspective, `C-Kermit' wasn't meant to be more than an external
file-transfer protocol driver for a BBS! You got me surprized somewhat.

                                  ;-)

MK> I would appreciate your input.
MS> The `RIME_DOS' EchoMail should be accessible to you...
MK> ...I don't like DOS. Can they handle "criticism"...

There's no need to start a discussion if you only wish to inform us
that your BBS is ready for a visit. Winston may decide to join in but i
can't answer in his name, i just know i'll be there for the tuning if it
doesn't matter to you that the ~IKSD~ server isn't going to be involved.

MK> What benefits are there to using DOS? ...I doubt anyone there could
MK> persuade me to return to DOS.

It would be pointless to launch this sort of thread here!!! :> No
urge to convert you back to DOS in order to get `Kermit' support: i bet
on the `Linux'/`C-Kermit' combination for superior results, actually!...

                                  B-)

MK> I don't have any DOS...
MS> I'll be glad to give it a shot! ...we'll publish...
MK> I could also switch telnet access to a different port if you can
MK> handle that. We may need to get creative...

If you're writing about making a BBS out of `IKSD' this may be more
creative than i could have imagined, this has little to do with the Look
and Feel of DialUp BBSing - unless you got a surprize in reserve??? :^)

MS> ...there's no BBS at telnet://24-dot-108-dot-41-dot-234:23...
MK> That is correct. Can you handle a different port? ^^

Ports are one thing; i'm getting worried about what BBS SoftWare
you have at the moment. I can specify port numbers both with `RLFossil'
or `COM/IP', i can ~TelNet~ as needed and i also got a backup ~ISP~. :)

MS> ...i don't check ~E-Mail~s very often...
MK> ...address is tothings at minimalinux dot org... ...more private...

I'd suggest we meet in a local message-base if privacy is required,
i no longer publish ready-to-use ~E-Mail~ addresses but it's easy enough
to filter extraneous strings from my contact page's mail:// link... ;-)

MS> Is the Shaw cable company OKay with you running servers?
MK> They have no say. None of my servers service cable...

Your 1st reply got me puzzled, the last one made things clear: i'm
considering the BBS as a server while you seem to have `IKSD' in mind...

MS> ...authors/SysOps on whom we depended for this hobby embraced a
MS> technological spiral... Why care to make SoftWare efficient...
MS> ...especially when asking users to UpGrade is "cool" and promoting
MS> `Kermit' is called weird evangelism by SysOps like, say, Rob...
MK> I've seen an example of his work.

We saw some of his fellows in action as well and they're a peculiar
model of objectivity... But take Swindell 1st: he made and published a
`Kermit' setup-file in a matter of hours, last year!!! It's no wonder i
heard of SysOps who had trouble with it twice this summer! %-b, He has
insisted that i must provide my own .INI to him, i submitted what i have
worked on for years and he rejected it as soon as it arrived: very slow
on what matters but expeditive on the rest! He thought i'd fail, i say.

MK> ...I don't see where universality fits in here. Needs a bit of work
MK> on the terminal end of things. However they are lightyears ahead of
MK> any other BBS package I have ever seen in that regard.

Some BBSers may appreciate, few SysOps should notice it at all: if
we get `C-Kermit' to work as an internal protocol driver, only the BBSer
will notice (to you it's just another file transfer, which is OKay). :)

MK> Not too shabby for Yankees eh?
MS> Yankee Kermit grew stronger while ZMoDem slaves prayed to end misery
MK> Needs a bit of work on the terminal... However they are lightyears
MK> ahead of any other BBS package... zmodem died over a decade ago.

Check this one, it's funny... I tried to fix Rob's unfinished work
no later than this afternoon (Wayne Warthen's `Kermit for Windows' hangs
the session since his loose install does no error traping); my touched-
up version now appears in the `FdN_Windows' echo for all to see, look at
the comment of another guy who specializes in providing more bad advice:

          http://fidonet.sensationcontent.com/echomail/windows/

_______________Gregg Somes about "SBBS/W32 Kermit install" (Oct-3-2004)_
GS> Kermit is mature, yes, so is my great grandfather, and equally DEAD!
GS> Wake up and smell the stench of a new mellium, use Zmodem.

                                    Salutations, ;-)
