SA> You hit the nail 100% on the head. I often get into the "which OS is
SA> better" war at work as I'm the only person I work with who does not use
SA> Windows at home -- though I use it at work on my primary workstation.
SA> I agree with you, folks need to use the OS they feel comfortable using
SA> and the one that does the tasks they need.

Well, if you would have been here earlier, Maurice and I had a little
discussion about it before. His problem is he's got his head stuck in
the sand of "Linux is the end all of OS's" world. I have pointed out
numerous times... Yes, Linux is my primary. I mean, how many put Linux
on top of the line computers? :) My system is currently a 3.24ghz P4
with a gig of ram... currently have (2) 300 gig HD's a CD-RW and a
DVD/CD drive... pushing a little Gforce 4 256 meg Video card. Now, I do
have my Windows machine, basically the same, but 3 gig's of memory. and
smaller HD's... but, its used for my Quickbooks, and some web designing
that I do. But as I just said... I run both OS's, because neither
completely fits my requirements.

SA> For me, it's more political then anything... I don't agree with
SA> Microsoft's tactics, specially since I work with an almost 100%
SA> MS-based company. I do however have 3 Linux boxes to do the tasks I
SA> feel more comfortable doing on Linux over Windows.

I don't believe in MS's tactics over all, but, stop and think about
something for a minute... removing what we know today, backing up to the
time frame that the majority of the incidence occured... then put
yourself in the business owner postion... I'd do whatever was legally
possible at that time to further my business. I do the same now. If
its legal, I do it. I am not going to say you don't step on toes...
that's part of business. To make it, you have to do whatever you can...
In that respect I applaude Gates... Yes, in todays environment, some of
his practices from back in the day are considered shady... but back
then, they were practiced by every business alive. Are you going to say
that IBM didn't do some of the same, if not worse? :)

SA> With all this said and for what I do at home, both linux and mac OSX
SA> work perfectly for me. i won't get into details (unless someone wants
SA> to hear it), but I rarely find Windows-only apps I just can't live
SA> without. In fact I've never.

Well, your not a business owner then... as I haven't found anything that
can do my bookkeeping that is on the same level as quickbooks. I have
tried many different, including writing my own. Quickbooks in its
package and for its price... is just one of the things I've run into.

Web page design... As I'm not a html/java/etc web page designer, I have
to rely on some programs for this. Dreamweaver, frontpage, etc... I
have yet to find anything in the linux realm that can compare.

That's just a couple. :)

SA> Anywhoo, i agree with your statements wholeheartedly. Every OS has its
SA> flaws, but depending on what one needs dictates what they use.

Amen to that... But at least you haven't buried your head in the sand,
as some in this echo have done. To continuly bash something and base
it off of old facts, previous shortcomings... etc... just makes the
basher look that much stupider. Hey, I don't run MAC's... but I don't
run around spouting off anything derogitory about it either. OS bashing
has no place in this echo... its Linux BBS's... which means, SynchroNet,
or any other BBS that runs under Linux. As for bashing on the
individual BBS's, and again, not running said BBS or having any real
knowledge in said forum, again, makes said basher look even more
idiotic. Then to top it off, to pick on said software and not expect
the author of said software to stick up for it <along with all the
converts/minions> to come to its defense... pretty shortsighted.

Oh well, some here have made a bed for themselves and will now have to
lay in it. Sure hope they don't mind the "Bumps". :)
