MEASURED IN ARKANSAS...
DURING THE SUMMER OF 1936...ARKANSAS WAS IN THE MIDST OF A PROLONGED
HEAT WAVE. ACROSS THE STATE...HIGH TEMPERATURES WERE ABOVE 100
DEGREES FOR MANY DAYS. THE TRIPLE DIGIT TEMPERATURES BEGAN AS EARLY
AS THE FIRST WEEK OF JUNE AND LASTED AS LATE AS THE THIRD WEEK OF
SEPTEMBER.
ON AUGUST 10TH...A MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE OF 120 DEGREES WAS MEASURED
AT OZARK ARKANSAS IN FRANKLIN COUNTY. THIS IS THE HIGHEST RECORDED
MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE IN THE STATE. ACROSS THE WESTERN HALF OF THE
STATE...THERE WERE MANY OTHER REPORTING STATIONS WITH MAXIMUM
TEMPERATURES ABOVE 110 DEGREES. MAXIMUM TEMPERATURES REPORTED FOR
AUGUST 10TH 1936 WERE AS FOLLOWS...
OZARK 120 TEXARKANA 117 SUBIACO 117
HOT SPRINGS 115 CONWAY 115 CAMDEN 115

DAYS ABOVE 100 AT HOT SPRINGS THAT SUMMER...24 IN AUGUST.

DEGREE DAY WAS ON SEPTEMBER 10TH. THERE WERE A TOTAL OF 49 DAYS
ABOVE THE TRIPLE DIGIT MARK IN HOPE THAT SUMMER.

PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LITTLE ROCK AR
545 PM CDT FRI AUG 4 2006
...TEMPERATURE READINGS FROM THE MONTICELLO AIRPORT VERIFIED AS
BEING CORRECT...
IN RECENT WEEKS...THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HAS RECEIVED SEVERAL
INQUIRIES REGARDING TEMPERATURES RECORDED AT THE MONTICELLO AIRPORT.
OFTEN...MONTICELLO HAS BEEN THE WARMEST SPOT IN ARKANSAS.
BECAUSE OF THESE QUESTIONS...ELECTRONICS TECHNICIANS AND
METEOROLOGISTS FROM THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN LITTLE ROCK
TRAVELED TO MONTICELLO TODAY TO CHECK THE TEMPERATURE CALIBRATION OF
THE THERMOMETER ON THE AUTOMATED WEATHER STATION WHICH RECORDS THE
OFFICIAL TEMPERATURE.
ELECTRONICS TECHNICIANS ALLEN ADKINS AND GARY HEIFNER PERFORMED THE
ANNUAL QUALITY CONTROL AND CALIBRATION CHECKS ON ALL OF THE
OBSERVING EQUIPMENT AT THE MONTICELLO AIRPORT. THE THERMOMETER WAS
FOUND TO BE WITHIN REQUIRED NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SPECIFICATIONS.
IN ADDITION...SENIOR FORECASTER NEWTON SKILES AND WARNING
COORDINATION METEOROLOGIST JOHN ROBINSON PERFORMED ADDITIONAL
TEMPERATURE CHECKS AT SEVERAL LOCATIONS ON THE AIRPORT GROUNDS AND
AT OTHER PLACES IN THE MONTICELLO AREA. BOTH A CALIBRATED DIGITAL
THERMOMETER AND A MANUAL SLING PSYCHROMETER...WHICH USES A MERCURY
IN GLASS THERMOMETER...WERE USED. THESE READINGS WERE COMPARED WITH
THE OFFICIAL READINGS FROM THE AUTOMATED WEATHER STATION.
ALL READINGS TAKEN ON THE AIRPORT GROUNDS...WITH ONE EXCEPTION...
WERE WITHIN ONE DEGREE OF THE OFFICIAL THERMOMETER. AT EARLY
AFTERNOON...TEMPERATURES IN A WOODED AREA APPROXIMATELY 3/4 MILE
NORTHEAST OF THE AUTOMATED STATION WERE 100 DEGREES WHILE THE
AUTOMATED STATION WAS REPORTING 97 DEGREES. THE DIFFERENCE WAS THAT
WINDS IN THE WOODS WERE CALM...WHILE WINDS AT THE AUTOMATED STATION
WERE BLOWING AT 10 TO 16 MPH. WINDS SUCH AS THESE TYPICALLY CAUSE
THE AIR TO BE MIXED MORE EFFICIENTLY THAN WHEN THE AIR IS CALM. THE
RESULT IS SOMEWHAT LOWER TEMPERATURES WHEN THE WIND IS BLOWING.
READINGS TAKEN BOTH EAST AND WEST OF MONTICELLO...FROM 2 TO 7 MILES
EITHER SIDE OF TOWN...WERE ALSO COMPARABLE TO THE TEMPERATURES
RECORDED AT THE AIRPORT WITH ONE EXCEPTION. READINGS TAKEN IN A
FORESTED AREA ABOUT 5.3 MILES EAST OF THE AIRPORT WERE APPROXIMATELY
2.5 DEGREES WARMER THAN THE OFFICIAL TEMPERATURE AT THE AIRPORT.
AGAIN...THE DIFFERENCE WAS PRIMARILY DUE TO THE FACT THAT WINDS WERE
VIRTUALLY CALM IN THE FORESTED AREA...WHILE A WIND OF 10 MPH WAS
BLOWING AT THE AIRPORT.
