[chomp chewed up table]

MP> So, in the above example, the telnet port is port 14?

no, not really... the _port_ is 23... the /listening/ socket is 14... if/when
you get a telnet connection, there'll be another "telnet..23" entry with
another socket number, an actual foreign host address, and a state of
"ESTABLISHED"...

ie: the following (trimmed) from my system with a live telnet connection for
this specific thread...

                          AF_INET Address Family :

MP> Also, what is local port 3141, or 139? I am a little concerned as
MP> they are both listed as "LISTEN"?

3141 is the vmodem port...

139 is one of the netbios ports... 137 and 138 are the other two... since you
have netbios networking in place, 139 must be in listen mode if you are going
to share any of your local resources with windows network neighborhood or *nix
type SAMBA systems...

as you can see from the above chart from my system, i have a live telnet
session in progress from 192.168.12.7 as well as a live netbios networking
session with that same ip address... in this case, it is a series of mapped
drives so that i can access the os/2 box's drives from my windows and linux
boxes...

you can also see that sockets 18 and 19 are connected to each other... this is
because i have mapped local drives on the os/2 box to other drive letters so
that the drives are accessible by the same letters from all machines on my
network... this way, i can access m: from any machine and know that it is
always c: on the os/2 box (for instance)... this makes my scripting and
configurations a whole lot simpler... especially with the bbs, tosser, mailer
and slew of other software used over here ;)

i've been unable to find out what my emfis-data (port 140) is all about,
though... it has been there for years but my few searches have not told me what
i have there...
