Ärende: Re:Really strange Part II
=================================
In a message dated 02-01-07, Mike Luther said to Holger Granholm:

Sorry for the delayed reply again.

ML>Part II, Holger, sigh..

ML> How much memory? = 64 Mb

ML>Ouch, wince. Not with any browser that uses shared memory, I'd
ML>think.

No, that's why I still use Netscape v2.02 but I will change to Opera
when I have got the replacement board fixed. It'll have 192 Mb RAM.
I am running Opera on the work machine.

ML> Tested with memory tester at board level on a DOS boot? = No

ML>Please! Clone that DOS boot disk with DISKCOPY on OS/2 and use
ML>MTEST86 or whatever just to proof things.

To proof what? I can attach a test taken with MEM.EXE under DOS if that
will help.

ML> Is drive only OS/2 or has other operating systems on it?
HG> On separate FAT partitions PC-DOS v7.0 and WfWG v3.11

ML>Dunno what this might relate to considering the above postings.

Dunno either what that WfWG has to do with the BBS machine.

Drive on BBS machine contains PC-DOS and OS/2 on separate partitions
and other partitions containing other files for the BBS. BTW, the C:
partition also contains the complete PCBoard file system.

ML>If your system is connected to the Internet and not through some
ML>kind of firewall and control operation, this leaves it WIDE open for
ML>external virus attacks from a remote source. It is a horrible hole
ML>for an OS/2 system left connected broadband.

I don't have broadband, only DUN access.

ML>........... Of course the modern WIN32 executables wouldn't run on
ML>OS/2. Notice the word 'modern'?

Noted! I know that so well that I haven't even tried, hi.

ML>Surprise! If you have the WIN32 original driver for OS/2 installed,
ML>a lot of the early WIN95 code WILL run on OS/2!

No Win32 drivers or system on the BBS and work machines. They are kept
on separate machines which have both antivirus- and antispamprograms and
have firewalls. Still I'm afraid to connect them to Internet, even DUN.

ML>TCP/IP. What is to stop anyone from simply modifying your
ML>CONFIG.SYS file or AUTOEXEC.BAT file to call their own whatever
ML>driver or file during your next boot run or use of a DOS-VDM

They will at least have to first pass the PCBoard log-in. That's the
only way in to the BBS machine. No log-in and you'll be kicked out.

ML>I do *NOT* use DialOtherInternetProviders or anything that requires
ML>this protocol after watching what was done to one of my boxes from
ML>afar one day. In that I am not working with anything that is WIN-XP
ML>or WIN32 file system interface with another network box, this
ML>horrible security hole for OS/2 isn't worth even enabling.

I have not experienced that security hole in OS/2.
______________________________________________________________________

ML>What was running on the box when you last left it up and unattended
ML>before you saw this?

HG> Nothing because it was a cold start after several days.

ML>Sure! Because the damage to the HPFS file system was done during
ML>the previous operations as a result of the corruption problems
ML>explained above. And HPFS cheerfully cleaned up what it thought was
ML>wrong. I only wound up really lucky in starting to trace all this
ML>because the corruption didn't start on my boot partition.

Now I'm completely off the wagon! If you are referring to the machine
that has faulty electrolytics it doesn't have ANY operating system
installed yet. It failed when I was about to install Warp4 before I even
had a chance to partition the disk.
________________________________________________________________________

ML>I hope this helps people understand why it is absolutely necessary
ML>with Warp 4 to at least update to the FP15 level, fix the Adaptec
ML>SCSI drivers and flash 2940 upward cards to the latest Adaptec BIOS
ML>code!

I hope so too. I have so far not heard (seen) anyone mention flashing
the 2940 BIOS. As far as the drivers go I have several versions.

Still no netmail today, thursday. Will check e-mail tomorrow evening.
