Replying to a message of Peter Knapper to Bob Ackley:

 PK> Hi Bob,

PK> So its match up time eh?.........;-)

BA>> Okay. This system is an IBM PS/2 model 9595 (486/66) running OS/2
 BA>> 4.0, Binkley 2.6 and Maximus 3.01. <g>

 PK> I have a 4.77Mhz PC/XT with 20MB Seagtea ST-225 HD. Dont know if it
 PK> still goes though......;-)

I don't call this place 'Bob's Boneyard' for nothing. Among the other things
here
are an original IBM PC, a couple of XTs and a couple of ATs, plus at least one
of almost every model of PS/2. And a lot of other 'stuff,' there's enough
computer
horsepower here to run a small city and all of the businesses in it without
raising
a sweat.

 BA>> I also have complete copies of OS/2 1.62, 1.63, 2.0,
 BA>> and 3.0 (all versions),

PK> v1.6??? Are you SURE about that no.?

I was until I looked just now. That should be 1.2 and 1.3, dunno where the 6
came from. Sorry.

[snip]

PK> Aha yes, the old 026... only really useful if you have an 025 as
 PK> well.....;-)

 PK> How about a 2671 then?

I should know what that is, but I don't remember. Predecessor to the 3330?

BA>> right next to my mainframe (yes, I really do have
BA>> my own personal IBM 9672

PK> That toy! How about a System 360/30 in your garage. Requires 3 phase
PK> power plus a heap of Air Cond. Best heater you could ever
PK> buy......;-) No, I don't have one myself but our local "Museum of
PK> Transport and Technology" has one that they fire up every month or
 PK> so...

Note that I know the 9672 works because I shut the thing down myself.
Not only 3 phase power, but 100 amp 3 phase power, plus a 3 ton air
conditioner. The nearest 3-phase power to me is about a mile and a
half away, I'm sure Mid-American would be happy to run a drop over to
my place and put in the required step-down transformers - if I send them
a check for about half a million dollars (just as Qwest would be happy
to run a fiber drop to my place from their main 3.75 miles up the road
for a similar consideration).

 BA>> There's also an AS/400 out there,

PK> Modern stuff, how about a System 34? I could probably lay my hands on
 PK> a 3274 without much effort......;-)

I have two 3274s and a 3720, and a 3420 (clone, it's actually a Storage Tek
machine),
and a 3350 (B unit, unfortunately, no controller).

PK> Ah... those were the good old days when a computer looked like a
 PK> computer...

And ran like one. I cannot recall ever seeing or even hearing about an OS
crash on an IBM (or NCR) mainframe (I did see several on a Honeywell system)
absent a power failure or catastrophic hardware problem. But then, I've only
been in the computer business since 1974 ...

One point I liked to make is the fact that IBM was writing computer OS's when
Billy Gates was in diapers. While OS/2 isn't completely failure proof, it's
certainly a couple of orders of magnitude better in that regard than the
(unfortunately)
better-selling competitor.
