Ärende: ECS vs. OS/2 W4
=======================
Hi Mike,

MP> Aside from the fact that it is newer & still supported,
 MP> are there any other
MP> benefits (or caveats) to upgrading to eCS from Warp 4?

I still run 2 x Warp4 Fp15 systems plus this eCS 1.2MR machine, and the main
differences are that eCS seems to be better targetted (than W4) at modern H/W,
in that there are a lot of updates for OS/2 (eCS) still flowing, and an install
of eCS feels "more complete" from an OS perspectve. However it will be
interesting to see how long the updates continue.

By the above comments I mean that if you have the H/W, then eCS can probably
take better use of it than W4 (IE at the same level as the IBM convenience
packs). It does require more memory than W4, but that seems to be because there
is more resident code being used and for the user that give the impression that
it is performing better than W4 was.

MP> Does eCS eat up a lot more memory or resources compared to Warp?

It depends what you mean by "a lot".......;-) This machine is a P3 700 with
384MB RAM and under W4 a startup would leave me with around 300MB free. Under
eCS a startup leaves about 270MB free (my standard startup fires up several
programs that I leave running 24x7). Theseus indcates that W4 had about 24MB of
"non-Swappable" memory in use, while eCS reports that is about 60MB of
non-Swappable, so its my guess its this extra resident stuff that improves the
performance. I think its a move well made because memory is pretty cheap these
days. If I bought new H/W now I would probably go for 1GB RAM, as I would
struggle to use all that with what I do, but it makes no sense putting in
less...

However it is more noticeable that under eCS, over time slightly more memory is
chewed up by the apps than under W4, but not by a lot. 5 days of runing would
leave W4 with ~150MB free, while ECS still has about 100MB free, but this is
going to differ dramatically for each person depending on their regular
"habits". Ending Mozilla and restarting it would result in W4 having about
200MB free and under eCS I would get about 160MB free, so its horses for
courses........;-)

The interface is nicer (IE its newer looking), but it seems to have inherited a
little bit of Widows styling, although that can be a subjective comment.

MP> Does VMODEM work with eCS?

I dont use it but I don't see why not, Ray Gwinn has followed the party line
with SIO and OS/2 so I would be VERY suprised if there were any issues. To me,
eCS looks, feels, smells just like W4. One thing eCS seems to be doing well is
the upgrade/patch path (the maintenance tool), they are very easy to apply
these and it can be almost left alone to do.

When the wife needs a machine upgrade next she will probably inherit this one
and I will get another ECS for my new one, I have no reason to move the BBS
machine of W4 (yet...).

I have only heard of one person who didn't like eCS but that was a Windows
weanie who went back to Windows, so its probably not a useful comment.....;-)

Cheers............pk.
