I had running an PC with 2 x 4 GB SCSI disk. The dumb system needs alone
without install of a single application 4 GB harddisk space only for the naked
NT, So I had to mount another 4 GB disk only to be able to get the GDI color
laser attached to it for nothing more than one singe page black/white out of
the printer. Then, as the priner was defective I got from its manufacturer the
needed hardware to repair it - but that required an update of its firmware -
and that required to upgrade the system to W2K because the NT driver was unable
to contact the printer now.

Si I had installed W2K instead of NT loosing any app, any configuration, any
possibility to get a better display as 256 colors on 800x600 and the compulsion
to reboot the system at lest monthly - even as the system has nothing, really
nothing more to do as to function as printserver for one single laser printer
who requires for all primitive function an working W2K because it can do
nothing without that.

Printing about 5 pages/day it hungs itself up at least once a month and will
not be able to serve the printer until it gets rebooted.

Windos is crap at all and not useable for real work.

I run another mashine 365d/year without reboot that is used as
- printserver
- mysql server
- WEB server
- FIDONet node
- fileserver
- fax reciever
but it is not on windows but eComStation. It works unattended for more than a
year now without the need of a reboot. It works so even as in the past 3 year I
had to move the system from an 5 disk SCSI system to an 1 disk EIDE because the
SCSI controller and one of the disks attached to it was died. I used simply
another controller on another mashine to copy all the data from any good disk
to an big EIDE disk (means 4 x 4GB disk to a single 40 GB IDE with multiple
partitons), restoring the data from the defective disk from archive and one
week ago I had to change the 40GB to an 160 GB one because lack of free disk
space.

Nothing installed between the moves. But the files the fileserver has to hold
was increased in number of files and number of used bytes in a way that there
were the possible free space runs out to 0 and expansion of the partitons was
needed.

That is what eCS is good for:
- move the whole system from one disk of one type to other disks of other types
without the requirement to install the system again
- use the system extensive without a need to reboot
- leaving the system on less than 1 GB partiton and data somewhere else instead
to reinstall the system when 4 GB are too less to hold only the basis system.
- change hardware as needed without requirement to install the system from
scratch
This includes the complete replace of mainboard and processor,
change the system from SCSI based to IDE based and back
change monitor and/or graphic card without any fiddeling with drivers
  or loosing graphic capabilities

Any software from Redmont was, is and will be in future real crap.
