Ärende: Large harddisks for Warp
================================
Beware of a change in Dani's offerings!

HG> If you have the original Warp 4 CD it can't handle harddisks over 8 Gb,
HG> or was it 4 Gb. However, there are new drivers available for both large
HG> IDE and SCSI HD's. IBM has made such but the most popular substitutions
HG> are the ones made by Daniela. They are available from Hobbes and named
 HG> DANI**** something.

As of her latest incantation of her data song, you must also substitute her
DaniATAPI.FLT for use with DaniS506.ADD. Otherwise you won't be able to see or
use your CD/DVD devices!

Also although with the previous versions of DaniS506.ADD you could freely
rename her driver to IBM1S506.ADD and everything was fine; not necessarily so
for some things! There are logging and error trace differences with the latest
version of her offerings which don't work out as perhaps needed if you re-name
the driver this way.

Further, when you make up the Utility Diskettes for emergency bootup from
floppy disks, watch out for the differences in your actual files on them as
well as the CONFIG.SYS which is used here. For example, if you were using
IBM1S506.ADD for things when you started things, then moved to DaniS506.ADD
later and re-named it to IBM1S506.ADD for use with hardware you changed to
later, then got the urge to move to the latest offerings which require the
added use of DaniATAPI.FLT in substitution for the BASEDEV=IBMATAPI.FLT and
BASEDEV=IBMIDECD.FLT, which is what is required, and you use the CONFIG.SYS for
the <ALT F1> boot run to a command prompt, you can get trapped in bad things
that way too.

Be REALLY careful on how you plan all this when you do an ARCHINST.EXE use of
the IBM supplied utility to archive your complete OS/2 emergency boot run
driver and equipment setup plus CONFIG.SYS for a system which has gone forward
from where it all started with your install. That sets the core level of
things which will be involved with the <ALT F1> boot to a command line, for
example. If you have things wrong here when you do the archive the 'installed'
position, I think you can see things could go badly wrong. If that, plus your
Utility Diskettes are not capable of starting your OS/2 box for the future, so
that, for example, you could get a chance to run CHKDSK on a deal where a
serious power glitch got you .. I think you can see where something you could
have done to recover from real problems, could take place that was even worse
misery.

What I have done with things here to work through this when I'm using the
latest and greatest offerings is to go back to my original substitution of
DaniS506.ADD for IBM1S506.ADD by rename. But in this case I've left that file
in the last version she released of the DaniS506.ZIP of February 20, 2007.
This one doesn't have to be used with the DaniATAPI.FLT tool, though it
preserves what may be needed for more modern hardware.

Be sure you carefully read the documentation she provides. As well note that
she is contemplating for future work, the merge of the DaniS506.ADD work and
DaniATAPI.FLT into one file. That done I can see where it might work out that
if you left the IBMATAPI.FLT in there, as well as IBMIDECD.FLT, which in theory
shouldn't even have to be there with later versions of IBMATAPI.FLT, might
really cut your bungee cord on bail outs via Utility Disk work as well as <ALT
F1> boots to command line service.

As well, I've yet to complete my research on the use of her later tools on Warp
4 Fix Pack 16 or 17 enabled systems. That is actually on my to-do list in the
next couple of days!

Dani's work is a treasure for all of us for help in keeping OS/2 valuable as
hard disk and controller hardware has gone forward, as well as what IBM did
pick up from her and integrate into the system. For those of you who missed
her visit to Austin as part of WarpStock that year, you missed meeting a very
interesting person as well. The rattlesnake atire for the social event trip
she wore was really unusual.

HG> Also, the operating system of OS/2 must be completely contained within
HG> the first 1024 bytes on the HD. That shoudn't be a problem because you
HG> need only 120 Mb for the operating system alone. The programs you want
HG> to run can be on any other partition on the HD.

In my view a wise decision is to keep the operating systems and critical
service files on the boot partition and applications operations focused on
other than the boot partition.

As well, in my opinion it is better to move the SWAPPER.DAT file to other than
the boot partition for normal use and enlarge the as-booted file to a size
which in normal use keeps it from enlarging. Obviously that needs to be a HPFS
partition, and a less used one in normal use by design.

As well, I think maybe this longer post will help emphasize why it really is a
good ideal to move forward to the entire MCP2 and XCR04 Fix Pack level plus all
the updated stuff, if you have or will have to move forward with replacement
hardware and USB and all this stuff!

--> Sleep well; OS/2's still awake! ;)
