Hurrah at flaming last.

Ever since the Eclipse people came out with their "RCP" (Rich Client Platform)
i..e using Eclipse as a container in which to write your app, I have asked IBM
ppl when they intended to move to it esp wrt Notes & all the "notesy things"
e.g. the Workplace Open office stuff.

I admit this was in part coz I wanted at the time to start being able to get my
hands on some OpenOffice macrocomponents but also coz it made sense & would
IMHO really kick start the whole eclipse as app cntainer move....any way....

"Got Microsoft? It won't matter much longer if you don't as long as you have
the IBM Lotus Notes client. The next release of Notes, codenamed Hannover, will
begin beta testing this fall with a set of office productivity tools that
support the industry-standard OpenDocument Format (ODF), Lotus announced this
week at a user group conference in Germany.

The productivity tools will let users create, edit, and save a variety of
documents, including word processing, spread sheet, and presentation materials,
in the ODF format. The tools will also import and export file formats used by
Microsoft Office and some OpenOffice file formats and let users edit those
files and then save them in either the original format or as ODF documents.

"It breaks the trap users had in the past where their content was locked into
proprietary document formats such as Microsoft Office," says Art Fontaine, an
IBM Lotus senior offering manager.

The International Standards Organization (ISO) recently approved the ODF format
as an industry standard. It's also supported by Sun's StarOffice product and
the Sun-sponsored OpenOffice open-source productivity tools.

"Most vendors are defaulting to the new format for the easy exchange of
documents," Fontaine says.

However, Microsoft doesn't support ODF and has proposed a competing standard
called OpenXML, which it plans to present to the ISO for ratification.

Current versions of Notes let users view many files regardless of whether the
application that created each file is on the user's machine.

The productivity tools will be included with the Notes license at no additional
charge. They are the same tools that IBM released with the Workplace Managed
client in January and which IBM created in cooperation with open-source groups
like the one that created OpenOffice.

This will also be the first version of Notes that will be based on the Eclipse
open-source development tools. The client will still support existing Notes
applications, Fontaine says.

Administrators will be able to manage and deploy clients remotely so there
won't be any need to physically touch individual desktops."

Hopefully in the Eclipse OpenOffice spirit the ODF parts will be installable in
any copy of eclipse & just as "update site" away.
