For many, there are no VMs either.  From Slashdot:

This is just my guess, but since Dell, HP, and many others supply XP Home as
the default OS, the Vista equivalent (Home or Home Premium) will be the default
OS for new machines.

I also found it interesting to see the comments about "one machine".  Back in
the days of the IBM AT machines, there was the ability to replace the clock
chip to get more cycles.  An update to the BIOS stopped that in later
manufacturing runs ... you ran at (what was it?  6Khz? 8KHz) the authorized
rate.  Period.

The other thing that has got my interest about the "one machine" issue is the
narrow focus of most people commenting.  We (Barkto/Canopus denizens) and most
of the techie sites probably represent 0.01% of all users who do stuff like
this.  The vast majority of people are using machines at work which are fairly
tightly controlled (both in physical and accounting terms) so it isn't likely
to make much sense to restrict the licence to a specific computer unless ...
unless ...

And here's where I think things are going:

This is truly the last major OS from MS.  If a new OS were likely, then it
doesn't really matter that your Vista OS is restricted to a single box. The new
OS will come out and you'll put it on your current (or new) box. But if no new
OS is planned then it makes sense to say your copy of Vista is restricted to a
single box.

It will be interesting to see if parallel restrictions appear on the next
release of Office.
