The problem especially with the "expert" option you suggest is that =
experts differ. I would consider myself an expert user and your = preferences
are not my preferences.
I disagree there is any meaningful difference between what you call =
"newbies" and what you call "average users". I especially do not = believe you
can make an intelligent distinction.
Even as an expert, I prefer almost all UI settings to remain the =
default for several reasons. One is that the defaults are OK for me. = The
type of changes I make are to tighten security in ways that you = might find
objectionable such as disallowing auth except 128-bit NTLMv2 = and Kerberos
which prevents access from Windows NT 4.0 and other old = versions of Windows.
I also disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP which also = prevents access from Windows NT
4.0 and other old versions of Windows. = I tighten other security settings and
enable settings that force buggy = applications to be more likely to crash.
I've enabled these for years. = I wouldn't have recommended disabling Windows
NT 4.0 access to your = default Windows 2000 user but it was fine for me. In
fact I think all = my changes are good for me which is why I make them but I do
not have = your ego to suggest that my preferences should be the default for =
others.

I do turn them off, however upon first login there are lots of them. =
Windows=20
update, security center, backup and restore, defender, it seemed like =
they=20
just wouldn't leave me alone.
As for my defaults being silly. Is it not silly to believe that one =
size=20
fits all? I was suggesting 3 choices, one geared to newbies, one =
geared to=20
average users, one geared to experts.

The notifications to which you refer are not questions which is why =
they=20
display quickly then disappear. I see few of these and could turn =
those off=20
if they bothered me. If they bother you turn them off. I'm still =
surprised=20
you see many. How many to a barrage?
Your preferences have not become standard. As for the firewall =
default=20
change in SP2 I would turn it on before SP2 and am happy it is on by=20
default. It can be a problem though because some common third party=20
products would screw up when the firewall was on. I had several =
friends=20
that lost all network access because mcafee or norton would turn on =
their=20
firewalls even if previously disabled and whatever they do the result =
was no=20
network access not just two firewalls. Maybe these products have =
fixed this=20
by now but it would have been an even more serious problem when =
Windows XP=20
was first released.
That's besides the point. Most of your preferences are fine for =
you=20
which is why they are options but the suggestion they be default is =
silly.=20
You have repeated this for years and it is still silly.

I'm referring to the barrage of those help bubbles that keep popping =
up=20
from
the bottom of the screen and all the other questions the damn thing =
asks
when you first login and start clicking around.
