You can upload all your preferences. Export HKEY_CURRENT_USER and =
copy %USERPROFILE%. I don't think this is what you want. You want to = share
only a few of your preferences which you can do in a similar = manner but
requires you to put some thought into what you want to share. =
What I have is an INI file that is imported with REGINI. I actually =
have two, one with machine preferences and one with user preferences. I =
could use one file but it works better for me with two.
I wasn't asking for an example of an error message which you find =
lacking. There will always be opinions on including two much or too = little.
Your example happens to be a bad one since the message is very = informative.
It sucks because the information it provides is useful for = an expert only
which is the opposite of the point I believe you are = trying to make.

Ok fine so there is no convincing you but I think you are just hung-up =
on=20
the choice names I picked. How about this, once a user has configured =
all=20
these things how they like them, allow them to save all these =
preferences=20
folders/search/menus/gadgets/power/extensions/wallpaper/ie=20
zones/windowsupdate/etc etc to a preference file that can easily be =
uploaded=20
to a website much like trillian skins. Make it a very powerful feature =
that=20
saves all the stuff that users consider preference settings without =
having=20
to be a programmer. Expand on the themes idea.
Error message that is not informative, unplug your network cable and =
hit=20
send/receive in windows mail.
The host 'mail.getinfo.org' could not be found. Please verify that you =
have=20
entered the server name correctly.
Account: 'Abuse', Server: 'mail.getinfo.org', Protocol: POP3, Port: =
110,=20
Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 11001, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D
I've been using this account for 10 years, the server name is most=20
definitely entered correctly, you just caused 20,000 users to screw up =
their=20
email settings because sbc's dsl service went down for 5 minutes or =
because=20
the users' domain has expired or their dns server is down or any of a=20
hundred other reasons none of which has to do with the server name =
being=20
entered correctly. Don't suggest a fix without determining the cause. =
What=20
does "could not be found" mean? Did dns timeout, did they get =
nxdomain, did=20
they get a response of 127.0.0.1, what was the error?
If I do the same thing with IE7, unplug the network and try to go to a =
valid=20
website, it correctly determines the problem and the solution. Nice. =
Same if=20
I try to go to a site that doesn't exist like www.nthelp2.com it tells =
them=20
the domain doesn't exist, nice again.
Also, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D means nothing=20
http://www.nthelp.com/50/Outlook_error_codes.htm can't we included the =
real=20
message in the help files and bring that up instead of the number? Or =
at=20
least make the number a link to this page on the MS web site? (not =
that that=20
would help if the network were down)

My point is that I am an expert user. I don't think even you would =
argue=20
otherwise. Yet, despite that I use almost all defaults. I would =
describe=20
this as appropriate for a typical user not a newbie, ordinary user, or =
other=20
classification, simply typical user.
Selecting more appropriate views for folders with pictures is a =
good=20
thing. I was very happy when this was introduced in Windows XP as it =
shows=20
me more what I want to see. As for displaying it the same as last =
time,=20
this is the case unless you have chosen the option to not save view =
settings=20
for each folder.
Everyone gets informative error messages. Do you have specific =
examples=20
where you believe a "newbie" does not? As for experts not liking the =
system=20
to fix itself, as an expert I have to disagree. I want anything that =
can be=20
fixed automatically to be fixed automatically. I want this logged and =
in=20
some cases I might want a notification in the tray, of the type that =
you=20
whined earlier that you don't like. If your personal preferences =
differ you=20
can configure things your way on the systems you control. I can =
almost=20
guarantee that what you think I want as an expert is not what I want.
