Ärende: Re: Microsoft to back off Passport Service
==================================================
From: Mike '/m' <mike@barkto.com>

An interesting facet of all this, doubleclick does not seem to have trouble
being accepted by various websites. Yet those websites are very dubious of
Passport. I have to wonder why websites are more willing to partner with
doubleclick than Microsoft? Is the perception that Microsoft is *that*
untrustworthy that few wanted to buy into their Passport service?

That would explain the flood of Microsoft corp-gen* ads that I've been seeing
on TV.

 /m

*) corp-gen - ad-industry-speak for "corporate general" advertising. Ads
that are more focused on bettering the image of a corporation, than in selling
any product. Walmart is now embarking on a corp-gen ad campaign to polish up
its tarnished image.

reasons I dropped out of all windows beta testing (because they required
passport). My reasoning was two fold. First, if I wanted the computer to
remember my login information for a site, as you mentioned, I had the IE
password manager which I would use for unimportant sites like the NYT and such
but any site where I buy stuff I would always tell it to NOT remember me.

posting to the recent slashdot item on Passport, say that they perceived it as
similar to their running a password manager app on the client. This folks
obviously do want to automate the process. Third, IE and other browsers
contain password managers and people use them. Lastly, you have people that
use the same user name and password wherever they can and keep it all written
on post-its by the computer. They are just trying to make it easier.

Passport is not the same. It provides single sign-in where you have one
identity (per passport) at multiple sites not multiple identities, one per
site.

comments. My point was that the people who use the internet the most aren't so
stupid that they want a service to replace or automate the process of
confirming the person at the keyboard is the account holder.
