Realized I was more negative than I meant to be. There were some very = good
points in this Linux try. It seems to take forever to boot (but = then I was
used to WinMe on this box) but once it is running it is very = responsive. The

I plan to give Linux the full monte try out. Including seeing whether = Linux

then maybe I will tackle the home theater PC thing next. If = that all is
successful I may be essentially Windows free.=20

Bunkies,
I'm on vacation this week so I decided to try my luck at Linux again.
Recently read that Novell was making Suse 9.2 Professional a free =
download
so I thought I would go that way.
As my ThinkPad 600X has been idle for quite some time I decided it =
would
be the sacrificial goat. Did a thorough backup of all the data on it =
to
DVD.
Try the CD/FTP route for installing Suse. Burn the CD but the FTP =
never
connects. I'm sure there was something missed here, so I just said =
screw
it and downloaded the full DVD ISO image from a mirror. Only took a =
couple
of hours, not bad.
Then I go to burn the image and Nero V5 is unhappy about the image =
size.
Dick around for a while and then just download a freeware DVD burner.
Problem solved.
The initial install goes pretty well, except....
Yeah there had to be an except. This time it was the video display. It
recognized the video chipset correcty but would only allow a display =
of
800x600x16. As the native resolution of the LCD is 1024x768 that =
looked
real yucky! Reset it to the correct resoultion/depth, tested it within
YAST, and away we went.
The, on reboot, once the system went in to graphics mode I just got =
this
very pretty rainbow affect on the display. Not what I was looking for.
Booted in to a command prompt (so much for this being your grandma's =
OS)
and ran YAST to reset the video to exactly the same parameters I did
before and it worked! sigh, it's a good thing I already drink ;->
But compared to previous Linux installs I have done this was a piece =
of
cake. OTOH most of the others were on DEC Alpha systems, not a =
mainstream
IBM laptop. In fact that is one other reasons I choose the ThinkPad,
mainstream and mature. The problems with the video actually surprised =
me.
Had enough for one evening at that point. Had one more hardware issue =
in
front of me, weaning the system from its PCMCIA/Ethernet card and then =
to
a PCMCIA 802.11 wireless card.
Tonight I tackled the wireless networking issue. Of course which =
wireless
card did I try first? A Linksys 802.11G. It wasn't recognized. Tried =
to
manually configure it, hit both the Suse and Linksys FAQs, no joy. But =
at
least Linksys had instructions on how to configure their older 802.11B
card for Linux and I knew I had one of those somewhere.
Yep, Suse 9.2 recognized the card and it installed. But it wouldn't
connect. But at this point it wasn't a Linux problem. I had forgotten =
that
I had configured my WAP for 802.11G only, change it to mixed mode.
Still no happiness. Then I'm watching the boot messages (something I'm
sure your grandma dotes on<g>) and I catch an error message about =
wpa.....
something or another not loaded, network unsecure. Great. I have the
wireless network setup as WPA-PSK, which is as secure as it gets, and
Linux hasn't installed the package for it even though YAST allowed me =
to
set the parameters for it. Reset my WAP for no security, I'll just =
have to
set it to filter on MAC addresses when I get around to it. I can still =
be
sniffed then, but at least no one can actually use the network.
So I am basically up and running. This message was composed and posted
using the PAN Newsreader. Tomorrow I will start from scratch. YAST =
kept
way too much of the old WinMe on the hard drive. I wanted to nuke it
completely, so I'll hook up the floppy, boot DOS and blow everything =
away!
