There are more recent builds, but I haven't yet felt the need badly enough to
put the time in to do it.

The base OS is eCS v1.1 (built on an OS/2 Warp 4.52 base) by Serenity Systems,
run by a former IBMer (Bob St. John).

Application wise, there are an increasing number of apps being cross ported
from Linux developments. Developers have learned a lot in the last few years
about making GUI apps cross-platform, which is why there are up-to-date OS/2
versions of apps such as Mozilla, Open Office and The GIMP.

As for the future, IBM is still updating the OS (new functions, new device
drivers etc) and plans to do so for several more years. Much of the work is
requested by big corporations. As such, device drivers tend to be for hardware
common in CDT (Commercial DeskTop) use but that's not a big restriction. CDT
stuff often has a custom form factor but the chipsets and implementations tend
to be generic. There are quite a few current laptops that are fully supported
under OS/2 - there are even drivers for some of the Winmodems.

Speaking of device drivers, two "honorable mentions": First, Scitech for their
SDD video device drivers. They developed a cross-platform device driver
architecture that allows them to produce a driver set for any new chipset in a
fraction of the time it used to take, and ported it to OS/2. It's so good, IBM
licensed it and bundled it. Second: Daniela Engert. She single handedly
developed disk device drivers for chipsets that IBM had been unwilling/unable
to support and has since made her presence felt in other areas of the OS. She's
a goddess to those in the OS/2 developers' community. And I do mean goddess...
you may have a preconceived mental image of what an uber-geek woman programmer
would look like. Now look here...
