A) Machine != address. It can but not necessarily. B) The page may be created
from a number of different addresses & then composited together (the easy
example being "tracker images" & indeed adverts served by double click etc. C)
The page may be relayed back in a meta-form (e.g. XML) along with a style sheet
(e.g. XSLT or CSS) & the browser combines the 2 together to produce the page.
D) The return path is not necessarily the same as the request path (in many
ways it's a key point of the Inet). E) The path from say CA > NY may be via
chile or germany F) A request may be passed to another address & then proxied
so that it looks like it was coming from the orig address

An easy example is wrt online betting where some countries have laws against
betting externally to the country & the main website can get round that by
making sure that the bets are placed & the results served from a box in the
same country as the punter even where the main page is in a 3'rd country.

i.e. the paerson in CA may actually being served by a local server even though
he's looking at the New York Times website.

It's a pity I can't give you the schematics of a global website such as the
Vodafone live system where vodafone have lots of local telcos all working off a
single "address" but where the routing & SID determines what lang your portal
is represented in, the model of your phone dictates how the page is rendered
etc.

but as an example, take google:

www.google.com. 147 IN CNAME www.google.akadns.net.
www.google.akadns.net. 103 IN A 64.233.187.99
www.google.akadns.net. 103 IN A 64.233.187.104

D'you think that's one machine?

& yet if I do:

www.google.co.uk. 238099 IN CNAME www.google.com.
www.google.com. 84 IN CNAME www.google.akadns.net.
www.google.akadns.net. 40 IN A 64.233.187.104
www.google.akadns.net. 40 IN A 64.233.187.99

but.....if I then click on the news link I get a more UK orientated google news
if I go in via the .uk addr.

It all comes from points (A) & (B)

Imagine a dish at a restaurant. You are buying the dish (e.g. spaghetti
bolognese) The dish comes from the kitchen. However the dish may be composed
from brazilian beef, kenyan tomatos, italian basil etc. It may have actually
been cooked in a factory in illinois & then microwaved in the kitchen...
