Mike,

For me the choice to go with a cable modem was a no-brainer. Sprint was =
basically raping me with their DSL service. I doubled my download speed = and
saved $30 a month by going with cable modem service from = PatriotMedia. On top
of it I found afterwards that Sprint was offering = better pricing to new
customers and not advising their existing = customers of the new plans.

OTOH Sprint did offer some added value that offset some of the cost =
difference. Earthlink provided all the non-transport services (mail, = news,
web-hosting) as well as providing dialup access when I was on the = road. With
PatMedia I have no dialup access and they do not provide news = servers! Mail
and web hosting is there, but no news servers? So I have = had to subscribe to
a news service and this summer when I travel a bit I = will have to subscribe
to a cheap dialup service.

Then again I just checked Sprint's website, and things have gotten a = whole
lot more reasonable. $55 for 3Mbps service, with all the goodies. =
$13 cheaper than my 5Mbps cable. I may have to go back to Sprint. My =
cablemodem service has tested out at typically 3Mbps, a bit below what = it is
advertised for, while using the same test site, the 1.5Mbs DSL = service from
Sprint always tested out right at 1.5.

I'm soooo glad I setup the domain oellrich.us at Yahoo! Change service =
providers, edit a setting in my Yahoo! page and a way I go.

Another plus would be getting rid of the coax cable. I'm going to do it!

Verizon's [now in pilot test] FTTP (fiber to the premises) has a =
30mbit/sec
download rate. I know SBC is working on something similar. But I =
wonder if
the cable companies are capturing too much of the market with their =
earlier
  start.

I've been thinking of switching over to cable modem, but the local =
Comcast
franchise is too slimy in their dealings with the customers. I prefer =
not to
give them any more money than I already do.
