Glenn,
Since there is really only one spot that I use the laptop, the deck, = that
isn't already wired for CAT6, I might as well wire the deck as = well. Besides
I think the real issue is the aluminum siding on the = house, as I have had
issues with multiple vendors (I keep them matched = in any given implementation
of my network) and all three ratified = versions of 802.11. So playing with an
unratified version isn't an = attractive idea.

Maybe try one of the 801.11 pre N's? There was a review of the Belkin =
on=20
register.com, and while they said it was not initially going to be=20
compatible with the final N spec, I would suspect that a firmware =
upgrade=20
would solve that problem. Besides, if it's the only N you need, then =
why=20
not, as it supports b,g, and I think a.

Glenn,
Now this looks cool! I really like the fact that all the MPEG/DivX =
encoding=20
is done in the unit.
I have an ATI TV WONDER USB 2.0 that I have been using, sorta, with =
my=20
laptop, but I really don't like its performance. It seems to be just a =
TV=20
tuner and the CPU is expected to do too much work, frame loss and =
distorted=20
images.
I have been toying with getting an ATI TV Wonder Elite for my main =
system,=20
but now I'm in a quandary.
$149 for the TV Wonder Elite (it does do MPEG2 encoding), and then =
just let=20
the native power of my Athlon64 do after the fact transcoding to other =
formats and use the LAN to transfer them to the laptop. Or the Plextor =
for=20
$199 which I can easily share between my main system and the laptop, =
and=20
does all the conversions itself.
But here is what is really in the back of my mind, somebody, sometime =
soon=20
has got to come up with a PC TV Tuner card the supports digital cable =
HDTV.=20
ATI has one for over the air HDTV, but I'm way too far out in the =
boonies=20
(worse I did have a tall antenna pole that could pull in the NYC =
channels,=20
but one of the trees that hit the house took it out and I never =
replaced it=20
or claimed it as I didn't use it for anything).
Oh the dilemma of it all!
Finally made a decision, the ATI TV Wonder Elite. Was a nanosecond =
from=20
punching the "Complete Purchase" button on Plextor site, but then a =
little=20
sanity took hold. Hey fifty bucks is fifty bucks, right? And ATI for =
me is a=20
known evil <g>. More importantly I plan to redo the whole house, =
including=20
the deck, for Gigabit Ethernet this spring, so shifting around =
gigabyte=20
files will be no big thing.
And for just streaming files from one of my desksides to the laptop on =
the=20
deck would only require me to run a 100Mbps connection to the deck. I =
have=20
found that 802.11G is not sufficient for that. It should be, but no =
joy. Too=20
many retrains/dropouts. Plus it will completely eliminate the wireless =
security issues.
