If I were an idiot, I wouldn't question things like CAL requirements.
I've had a fair amount of experience buying MS products like WIndows =
NT, while the examples you give of application software may have gotten = lower
(office), the price of NT has not, things like the 10 connection = limit,
requirements for CALs and CAL pricing, upgrade costs of CALs, = separation of
functions to higher dollar versions (like Enterprise) have = all added to the
overall cost.
I don't know SQL server very well as far as historic pricing. But I =
seem to remember that initially there was no CALs required for internet =
users, then there came a change that required a $2000 Internet Connector =
license so I have to question if in real world use it's really cheaper = today
than it was years ago, even if you adjust for inflation.

yes, expensive is subjective and totally unrelated to the costs of =
production. So did SQL server require user CAL's back at the time you = are
current prices to or was the CAL requirement added sometime after = version
1.1?
Geo.

Expensive is subjective. As I demonstrated to you with real =
world examples of Microsoft Office and Microsoft SQL Server, both are = less
expensive in current dollars than they were years ago which makes = them even
less expensive in inflation adjusted dollars, both are much = more functional
than the old products with which you compare them, and = the cost to produce
these has increased. If you feel they were = expensive in the past and despite
the price decrease remain so you are = free to.
