As for system startup, at least my computer keeps a constant rattle when
starting up so it's definately readin a lot from disk. I think comparing to
hibernate is not really meaningful, as nothing is actually "done" there but
just writing (and reading back when coming out of course), while at startup I
think many apps/drivers/whatever probably do a whole lot of initialization
stuff.

Games load a lot from the hd, only the copy protection stuff usually is checked
from the cd. The hd is so much faster than cd that most of the data is
typically copied to hd while installing. I too won't point at the hd speed as
being such a big deal for most people, but in some cases it really is.

believe most time is spent in initialization.  At the same time, sleep
mechanisms which avoid the load from disk step of hibernate are better still

   I'm not much of a gamer, do games load from hard disk now or do they
still load from CD or DVD?

   Anyway, I'm not saying that faster disks are pointless, only that they
are not the bottleneck george believes they are.
