Opening the browser for me waits for the network only. Purging the =
browser cache, which is nothing but deleting thousands of files, is disk =
intensive. It's also a very uncommon operation.

I do notice what I wait for. If I'm not doing something stressful =
like a build or SQL query which are disk and CPU intenstive, I'm waiting = on
the network. I have enough memory so it isn't an issue for me. = Again I'll
use my father as an example. When he is waiting it is on = memory.

No, you don't need gig video files to experience disk lag, heck just =
open IE or purge it's cache. Open outlook express and count how many = seconds
your disk runs. There are tons of things that peg the disk.

Look, I'm not saying you don't have valid points, but keep your eyes =
open for a few days and every time you find yourself waiting for the =
computer, take a look at the disk light. Is it pegged?

  Geo.

Waiting on what, processing the gigabyte video files you =
mentioned earlier in this thread? Sure. I have plenty of tasks I = perform
that are very sensitive to disk performance. These are not = ordinary
operations. When I look at what affects performance for my = father, it is
memory. When I'm not performing something disk intenstive = like a build or
SQL queries of large data sets, it's memory for me too. = You could take this
to an extreme. With 16GB of RAM many of the disk = intensive operations I
perform wouldn't be but at this point the = additional memory is used as a disk
cache not application memory.

      I'm not saying memory can't be a bottleneck, it's just that when I =
notice I'm waiting on something on the computer, the disk is always = going
full tilt. On my work machine which is just a 2ghz box, it feels = like a much
faster machine than any of the other systems I have. It's = also the only
system with high speed scsi disks, and I still end up wait = for disk at times.

      Geo.
