I already gave george a tivo example and others. He simply ignores =
anything that goes counter to what he prefers to believe. I don't want = to
speak for my friend that I used in the example because I did not = specifically
ask him if he would go back to save money. I will speak = for myself because I
made the same transition from VCR and tape to DVR = some years ago. I too pay
more now but I would not go back. A = limitation with tape was that in
practice I had to watch the last shows = recorded first so that the tape would
be in a good position to record = whatever was next. I now have random access.
I also used to be limited = to only a few hours of recording and lower quality
to get the capacity. = Now I have plenty of capacity with high quality. The
VCR was limited in = what it could remember to record. The DVR is much more
flexible. The = VCR require me to program in the times and channels from a
separate = source for the schedule and the process was tedious even with vcr+.
The = DVR includes an integrated channel guide. All these enable me not only =
to do what I did before with more ease and better results, I can do = things
that were impractical before like scan the near future schedule = and pick
movies or shows of interest that I might never have seen. =
Before DVRs I was satisfied with the VCR method I had been using for the =
previous 20 years. Once there was a better alternative, and one I both = knew
about and was accessible to me, I was no longer satisfied.
Now to your point, I described what made a difference to me. Whether =
those differences are either substantial or qualitative is subjective. = They
matter to me. I have friends that almost never watch TV. Their = opinions are
likely very different because of this and for what little = they watch they may
still be satisfied with a VCR even knowing about = DVRs and the benefits they
provide. In my earlier example of support = for spell checking latin scentific
names, this would not do it for me = nor I expect for most of the people here.
That was the point. = Something that you do not value could make a difference
in satisfaction = for someone else.
What does this mean? Well, it means that bozos like gary that pull =
numbers out of thin air claiming that people he doesn't know are = satisfied
with something that even he does not use have no credibility = to begin with.
I believe it is also important that people may be = satisfied with something up
to the point where they learn of something = better and that this knowledge
alone can reduce their satisfaction with = something that has not changed.

Certainly, but it has to be a substantial QUALITATIVE improvement. =
Even =20
then you may have to be dragged kicking and screaming, i.e. coerced, =
to =20
something which will be appreciated only after the fact. For example =
I =20
was royally pissed last May when my cable company announced that they =
were =20
pulling HBO from their analog service. It meant losing the ability to =
=20
program VCR recordings on my 8-hour tape for watching at leisure if I =
went =20
with the crappy default digital settop box (my TV and VCR were analog =
cable-ready) or taking their DVR. I took the DVR. It has totally =
changed =20
the way I watch TV as it has twin tuners and now I get 6 channels of =
HBO =20
(not counting the 6 west coast feeds) and I have a backlog of more =
decent =20
movies at any given time than I may ever catch up with. Lots and lots =
of =20
advantages like pausing and rewinding live TV, recording one show =
while =20
watching another live, or better yet recording two shows while =
watching a =20
previously recorded show or my VCR tapes or my DVD player. However, =
it =20
costs me more and if Adelphia hadn't pulled HBO off analog I'm sure =
I'd =20
still be happily programming recordings for my 8-hour tape.
