Oh sorry. Yes I went and found where that quote originated and read that
article.

http://pruss.net/blog/archives/2005/07/sound_of_breaki.html

read it and decide for yourself.

Seriously, he's right. Microsoft painted itself into a corner for years now.
They have ignored the customers NEEDS and focused merely on the Customers
WALLETS... If in 10 years time, Windows (or whatever they call it by then)
still have even 25% market share, it sure won't be for what they have been
doing the last few years. But, is this really any surprise? What is it that put
Microsoft on top to begin with? Was it their treatment of their customers?
uhh... no. Was their superior products? Hell no!

There is little doubt in my mind that what put them on top was nothing less
than simply being in the right place at the right time. But they are no longer
in the right place this time. They couldn't be in a worse place this time
around.
One of Microsoft's biggest advantages with Windows in the early '90s was Steve
Jobs... Specifically, he wasn't at Apple at the time. If he had been, he likely
would have seen the popularity of hundreds of PC clones for what they were... A
reason to be more compatible. When he started NeXT, he immediately set them on
a course to build a Unix based OS which eventually was picked up by Apple and
became Mac OS X. It's already nearly 20 years mature... Windows has been
redesigned from the ground up remains of DOS, 16 bit Windows and OS/2
(Remember, Windows NT was really OS/2, but Microsoft and IBM parted ways due to
a spat.

The key thing that held the Mac back from faster growth was incompatibility
with file types and hardware in the first 10 years. After System 7, they
started to get more compatible, and after a few more years, they started to
shed the Mac only technologies that were by then technically obsolete. When
Steve Jobs was brought back, he brought with him the NextStep OS, which was
easily extensible, compatible, and secure. It is OS X today, and if Apple's
board of directors in 1995 didn't remove him, it might very well have been the
Mac OS of 15 years ago!

While I honestly don't see Microsoft disappearing any more than IBM did after
it lost control over the PC, then DOS, then Windows, then OS/2... I sure see it
likely that in 5 years, the OS landscape will be a whole lot different than it
is today. One thing I am absolutely certain of... Apple isn't going out of
business... Microsoft's stock has been flat-lined for years now, but look at
Apple's stock the last three years... Apple's stock is like Mount Kilimanjaro
towering over the Serengeti plains of Microsoft.
