Ärende: New Laptop and Lots of XP Questions
===========================================
From: "Gary Britt" <email@from_Gary_Britt.org>

Last night I did a search on the new XP Home laptop for the file winnt32.exe
and it was in fact there, but I got an indication from somewhere (don't recall
if it was a tooltip or what) that this wasn't the real full winnt32.exe command
but a stub of some kind.

Well I decided to try and execute the command winnt32.exe /cmdcons to install a
recovery console boot option. (I don't have a full XP Home CD just a recovery
CD). When I executed the command I got an error message that said something
like couldn't upgrade because some Netupgd.dll file or something like that
wasn't present. I thought well yep this is stub alright and I can't install
the recovery console. I clicked OK to clear the error msg box and boom up
popped a window telling me that the recovery console would be installed hit OK
or Cancel. I hit OK and the recovery console was installed. Funny thing was
that to install the recovery console the computer went online somewhere (I'm
assuming Microsoft) and indicated it was downloading the files needed. When it
was done, I had a properly functioning recovery console, but do to security
restrictions I couldn't access all files and folders and drives. I've seen
this before and knew that a local policy setting needed to be changed to
authorize the all files and folders and drives and floppy access. Then I
discovered that XP Home doesn't come equipped with a policy editor that allows
you to view or set this and many other local policies, and if not for
persistence would be stymied with a recovery console that wouldn't be useful to
recover much of anything.

I think I've figured out how to hack the registry to get the set command turned
on in the recovery console so I can access everything when in the recovery
console. I've found reference to a technique of bringing over two files from
an XP Pro machine and registering them with regsvr32 that supposedly allows the
gpedit.msc console to run on XP Home. Anybody done this before?

I've notice a couple of times with XP Home now that executing what appears to
be a command or file on the local hard drive causes the computer to connect to
Microsoft online. It did it with this instance of running winnt32.exe /cmdcons
and it did it when I ran the general OS Help. In
poking around looking in the registry I noticed two or three entries that
seemed to list three executable files that would redirect to a connection
online at MS. Is this normal for all XP machines or just XP Home?

In looking at descriptions of the differences between XP Home and XP Pro on
Microsoft's website, a few things stuck out.

1. There doesn't appear to be an easy way to set the Administrator password or
to require people to logon (local boot up logon) manually;

2. XP Home isn't supposed to support multi-processors, but my device manager
says my computer is a multiprocessor PC and lists two processors (its really a
single processor Pentium 4 with HT). So what gives does XP Home support
multiprocessor or not??

3. No Encrypted File System (probably OK with that. I haven't used it in the
past really).

4. The peer to peer networking doesn't seem to be as controllable as on Win2K
for sure or even Win98.

5. No remote desktop sharing.

6. Doesn't come with the ability to easily set user groups, passwords, etc.
via an mmc console and doesn't come with the ability to set local machine/user
policies at all. (BOO to both of these).

Does anybody know how to turn off the "Angel protection horsepucky" that keeps
me from viewing the files on the recovery partition with explorer??

Any problems with loading the Win2K Pro Resource Kit Tools onto an XP Home
machine??

Gary

<Now that I've made XP Home look interface wise like Win2K, I don't quite
hate it as much as I used to but I still prefer win2K's speed over XP's slight
interface improvements>
