Let's make this simple for you. Geeks will like geeky things that =
normal people don't care about or even dislike. To avoid wasting time = on
more drivel from you on this subject lets just accept this for this =
discussion so we need not discuss it further. Now we can get to the = original
topic which is george's claim "It's the geeks that get there = first and then
everyone asks them how to do it" and specifically that = george was using this
as a statement that make the path not just run = ahead.
We can use DVD players as an example if you wish.
You apparently do live in another universe. I don't know ordinary =
people that purchased $1000 DVD players. People buy them now for many =
reasons and not because geeks got there first are available to ask them = how
to do it. DVD players are cheaper than VCRs were a few years ago = and maybe
cheaper than them now. DVDs are better quality and more = functional,
particularly random access. For folks that rent, VHS is = often not an option.
I know a few folks that only got a DVD when they = couldn't rent VHS anymore.
There was not otherwise a compelling reason = to get them. DVD players are
also simple to use. They are easier than = VHS as there is no rewinding and
very familiar for anyone with a CD = player.
So why don't you claim how it is the ordinary people adopted DVDs =
because geeks were there to ask how to do it. If anything geeks are = indebted
to normal people for driving production costs down.
The ipod is another example of something that succeeded without geek =
participation. It is popular for having style not for being geeky. = More
geeky devices did not succeed probably in large part because they = were viewed
as geeky. The general public doesn't like geeky.
Laser disc players are a great example of geeks leading the way to =
failure. The failed to provide value to ordinary people. That you = could
find a geek that bought one of these didn't help. Why? Because = geekiness is
not a driving factor. There are plenty of examples of = this. Geeks often
adopt products that fail. Are you going to blame = geeks for their failure.
I suspect you are confusing early adopters with geeks and making the =
further mistake of believing that geekiness helps not hurts adoption or = that
geeks drive adoption.

My lord Rich you really should stick to MSR because you obviously have =
no idea about hardware.
Every new home tech is first adopted by the geeks.
Take HiFi:
Do you need Dolby? Does A Geek?
Do you need stereo? Does a Geek?
Do you need separates & long discussion wrt the merits of this amp vs=20
tha amp, this tape deck vs that tape deck? Does a Geek?
So tell me Rich do your noise creation devices have such things as =
dolby=20
& stereo?
Take Colour TV or the modern equivalent hdtv:
Few if any broadcasts in the early period. Would that make the average =
buyer buy? Would it make a geek?
CD'es were the same as were DVD'es & Video in general etc.
Geeks are the early adopters. Heck who but a geek would want to "rip"=20
"CD'es" to "MP3" & then to transfer said "MP3 files" onto his "MP3 =
Player"?
Sounds uber-geeky to me.
So how about the IPod/MP3 player as an example of "that succeeded=20
because geeks adopted them and everyone else followed asking geeks for =
how to do it."
Because theat is exactly how it happened.
> What universe do you live in where DVD succeeded because of =
geeks? =20
It's this one. Who the F*ck would buy a silver disk player with few=20
films available in that format for much more than the equivalent VHS=20
tape player? ohh let me see....the same people who bought "video lazer =
disk players" etc? G....e....e...k...s.....
Wakey wakey Rich it's time for your medicine.
> Even more out there is one where DVD succeed because of JPEG and =
mp3?

Nah those are put n to keep the geeks happy & buying. Now they're =
going=20
onto playing AVI files etc & guess who's ripping DVD'es to=20
AVI'es.....gosh waiiiiit for ittttt......it's geeks.......
