Thanks for the reply, but Boortz?  Is that the bottom line here?  Heck,
Boortz tells you right up front on his web page:

So, I've got to ask, John.  Did you read any other opinions on the
report?  Did you review any of the summaries?  I visited this site
http://www.allamericanpatriots.com and downloaded this article just so
we could have a second opinion.

Millennium Study Finds Degrading Ecosystems Endangers Anti-Poverty Efforts

 Global research examines environmental decline, links to development

 30 March 2005

 As global ecosystems are degraded by the actions of humans, Earth's  
 capability to meet human needs is diminished and long-term development 
 is substantially more difficult.  The links between those trends are 
 drawn for the first time in a major global study released March 30.

 The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA) Synthesis Report finds that about 
 60 percent of Earths life-supporting resources such as water, fisheries 
 and air are declining in quality or being tapped in unsustainable ways.

 According to an accompanying press release, the report finds that those 
 trends will be a barrier to achieving Millennium Development Goals to 
 reduce poverty, hunger and disease and increase access to education and 
 opportunity.

 The 1,300 experts from 95 countries involved in the work say these trends
 can lead to dire outcomes the emergence of new diseases, creation of 
 dead zones in coastal waters and the collapse of fisheries.

 The MA Report was compiled under the auspices of the World Bank and the 
 United Nations but received funding from a variety of international 
 organizations and donors, including the U.S. Agency for International  
 Development and NASA.

 The assessment is required under the terms of various international
 environmental treaties, according to the press release.

 The report highlights four key findings:

 Human activities have changed ecosystems more rapidly in the last 50 years 
 than in any other period of history, resulting in a substantial loss of 
 biodiversity.

 As human well-being increases through use of ecosystem resources,
 environmental degradation increases.

 Ecosystem degradation could grow much worse in the next few decades,
 thus thwarting the achievement of Millennium Development Goals.
 Protecting ecosystems and satisfying the demands for their use is an
 achievable balance if significant policy and institutional changes are
 made.

 The U.S. government does not take an official position on this report,
 according to the State Department, but does regard it as another
 contribution to the body of work on sustainability and ecosystem
 management.

 U.S. officials also point out that the United States is leading a
 variety of international initiatives on health, water, tropical
 forests, energy and wildlife conservation to improve sustainability.
