Ärende: President John Kerry !!

Mulling over VERN HUMPHREY to JOHN HULL 09 Aug 2004

JH>They restrict what tests get done, they tell doctors what they can
JH>and can't treat and get paid for, they tell patients what they will
JH>and won't cover, e

VH> And in single-payer systems, like that in England, the government
VH> tells doctors what they can and cannot do. Again using England for
VH> an example, people over 55 can't get kidney dialysis.

That is an interesting claim. An estimated 21,150 new adult patients in the
UK were accepted for kidney dialysis between 1995 and 1999, and about 67% of
these were aged 55 and above, as recorded by Hansard.

Kidney Dialysis

Dr. Palmer: To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many
patients, by age group, have received kidney dialysis in the last five
available years; and what proportion of these are kidney patients in
each age group. [133981]

Mr. Denham: The information available is derived from the United
Kingdom Renal Registry and from provisional data collected in the
renal survey commissioned by the Department of Health. It is estimated
that 21,150 new adult patients were accepted for kidney dialysis
between 1995 and 1999, although a small percentage of these patients
will not have started dialysis. The age distribution of these patients
at the time they were accepted for kidney dialysis is shown in the
table:

Age range Percentage of patients

18-24 3
25-34 6
35-44 10
45-54 14
55-64 21
65-74 29
75-84 16
over 85 1

In addition, there were 420 new patients who were under 18 years old when they
were accepted for kidney dialysis between 1995 and 1999.

Additionally, Bill Brough, 54, of Great Ayton, North Yorkshire, would not have
been facing a "long life" of dialysis treatment if it was unavailable to those
over 55.

Hope for thousands as donors flood back
22/04/2003
Barry Nelson

The number of transplant operations has risen for the first time in six years
thanks to a big rise in the number of donors, it was revealed last night.

Almost one-in-five people in Britain are today on the NHS Organ Donor Register,
demonstrating that the negative publicity surrounding the Alder Hey organ
retention scandal is being overcome - and giving hope to thousands of patients
on the waiting list.

(snip)

Bill Brough, 54, from Great Ayton, North Yorkshire, was one of the
patients to benefit from a kidney transplant at the Newcastle hospital
"It is brilliant news that transplants have increased," he said.
"Thanks to my own transplant I am now virtually back to normal."

Bill was the first person in the North-East to have a so-called
"friend-to-friend" transplant in December.

He was facing the prospect of a lifetime of four-hour sessions on a
kidney dialysis machine three times a week after suffering renal
damage caused by Legionnaire's Disease picked up in Mexico.
