I understand and sympathize.  My mother is with AT&T.  They recently changed
the dialup pool number for her local access.  Ever since she has had nothing
but problems, and even with the accelerator program (which they charge extra
for!) it gets real frustrating.  I talked her into going with cable broadband
and they are supposed to come to hook that up this morning.

As for installing XP, I would recommend that you use Windows 2000 Pro instead.
It is MUCH MORE stable than XP, and doesn't have nearly as many holes in it. 
In fact, I just read this morning that IBM is recommending to ALL their people
to hold off installing the new 90meg Service Pack 2 because they have to go in
and "fix" it so it doesn't break their software.

My cousin also works for Microsoft (writing code) and when I asked him about
the problems with XP, he said he wasn't able to talk about it.  'Nuff said for
me.
