Ärende: carpet bagger Keyes?
============================
-=> Quoting Lee Lofaso to John Hull <=-

 >FS>Do I detect a trace of racism here? I hope not. BTW, did
 >FS>you criticize Hillary when *she* decided to run in N.Y.?

 >AH>I didn't criticize Hilary, and I'm not criticizing Keyes -
 >AH>both were/are playing by the rules. I just remember the huge
 >AH>hue and cry from conservatives when Hilary made her run, and
 >AH>want to see if they apply the same standards to a Republican.

 >SH>Am I the only one having a hard time remember this "huge hue and
 >SH>cry" in the Politics echo over Pig in a Pants Suit running for
 >SH>Senate in New York?

 >JH>I don't much like the lax residency requirements most states have
 >JH>for qualifying to run for an office like US Senator, but that isn't
 >JH>the issue in this case.

 >LL>U.S. Constitution, Article I, Section III, Clause III -

 >LL>"No person shall be a Senator who shall not have attained
 >LL>to the age of thirty years, and been nine Years a Citizen
 >LL>of the United States, and who shall not, when elected, be
 >LL>an Inhabitant of that State for which he shall be chosen."

 >LL>The qualifications for U.S. Senator cannot be altered by
 >LL>any of the states, or by any other law, being that the
 >LL>qualifications described by the Constitution for members
 >LL>of Congress are exclusive.

JH>There is nothing in the Constitution about residency requirements
 JH>to establish state residence.

LL> The U.S. Constitution says very specifically that a candidate must
LL> be "an Inhabitant of that State for which he shall be chosen."

Does the constitution *define* "inhabitant" and "resident"? If
*not* they can be considered to have the same meaning.

JH>It only says you have to be a resident of the state in which
JH>you are running for that office.

LL> Nope. It says one has to be "an Inhabitant of that State for which
 LL> he shall be chosen."

JH>If fact, you don't even have to be a resident at the time of the
JH>election, only at the time you actually take office.

LL> Nope. It says "when elected", not at the time you actually take
LL> office. Also, it is not "resident", but "Inhabitant". Big difference.

Does the constitution *describe* that "big difference"?

 >LL>IOW, said qualifications for office can only be changed
 >LL>by Constitutional Amendment.

 >JH>I still think Hillary is representing New York about as much as I
 >JH>am.

 >LL>John Hull is a U.S. Senator???

He didn't claim that, Lee ... [sigh] ... but you already know
that ...

 >JH>She waltzed in there and announced she was running, and got the old
 >JH>fart Moynihan to endorse her. Bottom line though, is she forced
 >JH>herself on New York.

 >LL>A candidate merely has to be an inhabitant of the particular state
 >LL>in which he/she is elected from by or on election day.

JH>Yeah? Well, now you know what a carpetbagger is.

LL> Carpetbaggers were Northerners who went to the South after the War
LL> of Northern Aggression for political or financial advantage.

Currently the term has a far-broader meaning, Lee. The Civil War
is over. You lost. Get over it ... [sigh] ... BTW, the "you" is
generic ...

LL> New York is Yankee Country, not the Land of Dixie.

 >JH>Keyes, on the other hand, was invited - nay, he had to be persuaded
 >JH>- to run the Illinois GOP leadership. He'll make a good candidate,
 >JH>and he's gonna ru rings around Obama in any debates. I think he's
 >JH>our next Senator.

 >LL>Keyes has a Constitutional right to run for U.S. Senator in
 >LL>whatever state he chooses. The same with anybody else. As long as the
 >LL>meet the qualifications set forth in the U.S. Constitution.

OK, so you *finally* admit you were wrong ...

 JH>And state residency requirements.

LL> Nope. Read the U.S. Constitution again. Article I, Section III.

 >LL>Obama should win the election quite handily. And then Keyes can
 >LL>go back to writing books. :)

JH>Obama is an ultra left wing idiot who tells the people what they want to
hea
JH>His only popularity is in the Chicago area. He is not popular downstate at
 JH>all.

LL> Obama is a man of the people. Keyes is a man of the wealthy.
LL> Being that the average voter is far from wealthy, Obama should
 LL> win in a landslide.

Most people think "Obama" means "Osama" ... he's an unknown
who'se slipping into obscurity ...

... Diplomat: A fellow who has to watch his appease and accuse.
