Ärende: Gore and the internet
=============================
Fuck Snopes.com. They have been proven to be biased a number of times, as you
well know. I posted the relevant quote from the Wolf Blitzer interview, so
your Snopes stuff is redundant to say the least. Go ahead though, claim that
Gore is the second coming of Christ and all will be well if we just elect a
Democrat. Go ahead, Bob, we all believe you.

BS> Why not tell the rest of the story John?

 BS> Via Snopes:

 BS> Internet of Lies

BS> Claim: Vice-President Al Gore claimed that he "invented" the
 BS> Internet.

 BS> Status: False.

BS> Origins: Despite the derisive references that continue even
 BS> today, Al
BS> Gore did not claim he "invented" the Internet, nor did he say
 BS> anything that
BS> could reasonably be interpreted that way. The "Al Gore said he
 BS> 'invented'
 BS> the Internet" put-downs were misleading, out-of-context
 BS> distortions of
BS> something he said during an interview with Wolf Blitzer on CNN's
 BS> "Late
BS> Edition" program on 9 March 1999. When asked to describe what
 BS> distinguished
BS> him from his challenger for the Democratic presidential
 BS> nomination, Senator
BS> Bill Bradley of New Jersey, Gore replied (in part):
BS> During my service in the United States Congress, I took the
 BS> initiative in
BS> creating the Internet. I took the initiative in moving forward a
 BS> whole
BS> range of initiatives that have proven to be important to our
 BS> country's
BS> economic growth and environmental protection, improvements in our
 BS> educational system.

BS> Clearly, although Gore's phrasing was clumsy (and perhaps
 BS> self-serving), he
BS> was not claiming that he "invented" the Internet (in the sense of
 BS> having
BS> designed or implemented it), but that he was responsible, in an
 BS> economic
BS> and legislative sense, for fostering the development the I also
 BS> invented
BS> the microphone technology that we now know as the Internet. To
 BS> claim that
BS> Gore was seriously trying to take credit for the "invention" of
 BS> the
BS> Internet is, frankly, just silly political posturing that arose
 BS> out of a
BS> close presidential campaign. Gore never used the word "invent,"
 BS> and the
BS> words "create" and "invent" have distinctly different meanings —
 BS> the former
BS> is used in the sense of "to bring about" or "to bring into
 BS> existence" while
BS> the latter is generally used to signify the first instance of
 BS> someone's
BS> thinking up or implementing an idea. (To those who say the words
 BS> "create"
BS> and "invent" mean exactly the same thing, we have to ask why,
 BS> then, the
BS> media overwhelmingly and consistently cited Gore as having claimed
 BS> he
BS> "invented" the Internet, even though he never used that word, and
BS> transcripts of what he actually said were readily available.)

BS> If President Eisenhower had said in the mid-1960s that he, while
 BS> President,
BS> "created" the Interstate Highway System, we would not have seen
 BS> dozens and
BS> dozens of editorials lampooning him for claiming he "invented" the
 BS> concept
BS> of highways or implying that he personally went out and dug
 BS> ditches across
BS> the country to help build the roadway. Everyone would have
 BS> understood that
BS> Ike meant he was a driving force behind the legislation that
 BS> created the
BS> highway system, and this was the very same concept Al Gore was
 BS> expressing
BS> about himself with his Internet statement.

BS> Whether Gore's statement that he "took the initiative in creating
 BS> the
BS> Internet" is justified is a subject of debate. Any statement about
 BS> the
BS> "creation" or "beginning" of the Internet is difficult to
 BS> evaluate, because
BS> the Internet is not a homogenous entity (it's a collection of
 BS> computers,
BS> networks, protocols, standards, and application programs), nor did
 BS> it all
BS> spring into being at once (the components that comprise the
 BS> Internet were
BS> developed in various places at different times and are
 BS> continuously being
BS> modified, improved, and expanded). Despite a spirited defense of
 BS> Gore's
BS> claim by Vint Cerf (often referred to as the "father of the
 BS> Internet") in
BS> which he stated "that as a Senator and now as Vice President, Gore
 BS> has made
BS> it a point to be as well-informed as possible on technology and
 BS> issues that
BS> surround it," many of the components of today's Internet came into
 BS> being
BS> well before Gore's first term in Congress began in 1977.

BS> It is true, though, that Gore was popularizing the term
 BS> "information
BS> superhighway" in the early 1990s (although he did not, as is often
 BS> claimed
BS> by others, coin the phrase himself) when few people outside
 BS> academia or the
BS> computer/defense industries had heard of the Internet, and he
 BS> sponsored the
 BS> 1988 National High-Performance Computer Act (which established a
 BS> national
BS> computing plan and helped link universities and libraries via a
 BS> shared
BS> network) and cosponsored the Information Infrastructure and
 BS> Technology Act
BS> of 1992 (which opened the Internet to commercial traffic).

BS> In May 2005, the organizers of the Webby Awards for online
 BS> achievements
BS> honored Al Gore with a lifetime achievement award for three
 BS> decades of
BS> contributions to the Internet. "He is indeed due some thanks and
BS> consideration for his early contributions," said Vint Cerf.

BS> A lie of omission is still a lie John but then that is a way of
 BS> life with
BS> the extremist right, isn't it?
